Under the direction of the school principal, special education director, and supervisors, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and support to students with disabilities in collaboration with general education teachers. Acts as the lead facilitator in developing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and all required documentation. Creates an atmosphere conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students to ensure success for every learner. Supervises students in various school settings, monitors and evaluates outcomes, and communicates with students, parents, staff, and the community.

Responsibilities

• Prepares for and participates in IEP/RTI team meetings; provides case management for assigned students with disabilities.
• Interprets formal and informal classroom-based assessments to make instructional decisions; collects data on student performance to improve outcomes and direct instruction.
• Administers and interprets formal assessments as appropriate; maintains student portfolios with current educational data.
• Selects and adapts materials to help students with disabilities access the general education curriculum.
• Participates in professional development activities to advance knowledge in instruction, best practices, and differentiated instruction.
• Supervises and plans professional development for paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
• Provides an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities.
• Assists in reviewing students with learning disabilities; provides input for IEPs using diagnostic programs (e.g., Ed Performance, Riverdeep, Compass Learning).
• Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, RCSS policy, and administrative regulation.
• Implements school policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develops and enforces reasonable classroom behavior and procedures.
• Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required.
• Establishes respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and the community.
• Plans and supervises assignments for instructional assistants, paraprofessionals, and volunteers; may evaluate paraprofessional performance.
• Assists students with personal care needs such as toileting, feeding, and health services (e.g., intermittent catheterization, tracheotomy care, tube feeding, changing dressings).
• Completes all required paperwork according to compliance standards and within given timeframes.
• Maintains fair and accurate grading policies, attendance records, email, and web pages as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors to support the efficient operation of the school system.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in special education; pursuing special education certification in a content area is desirable.
• Knowledge of learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, behavior management, and assessment.
• Knowledge of methods for teaching elementary reading and math if seeking an elementary position.
• Student teaching or two years of teaching experience in the specific area of exceptionality (e.g., learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, emotional disabilities) at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
• Meets Georgia state certification requirements in the appropriate field of education.
• Ability to move around the classroom, including stooping, bending, standing for extended periods, and moving objects up to 20 pounds.
• Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by contract.

Skills

• Thorough knowledge of Individual Education Programs (IEPs), IDEA 2004, and state/federal policies related to students with disabilities.
• Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials for diverse learning needs.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, and staff.
• Experience providing instructional support in inclusive settings.
• Proficiency in collecting and analyzing instructional data for decision-making.

Pay

Salary range in accordance with RCBOE Salary Schedules.

Schedule

10-month work year.
