Tier 1 (Title I) Paraprofessional Requirements
- Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education (minimum of 48 hours of college coursework)
- Obtained an associate's degree (or higher)
- Taken and passed the WorkKeys, ParaPro, or Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET)
- An Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Certificate is also required
- Willingness to complete the Tier 2 (Special Education) Paraprofessional Requirements and obtain the Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Certificate within 120 days of employment
- OSBI background check must be completed every five years to remain in compliance
Tier 2 (Special Education) Paraprofessional Requirements
- Complete the Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Training at a Career Tech Center, state-approved LEA training, or training modules in PEPPER
- Complete and maintain CPR and First Aid certification
- Complete training in Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens
- Complete an additional six (6) hours of professional development in Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens each school year following initial certification
Education and Credentials
- Education: High School Diploma or GED; Must hold an associate degree or have 2 years of post secondary education, or be a high school graduate and pass a PARAPRO or OGET test
- All teacher assistants newly hired and working or at a site supported with Title funds must:
- Have an associate degree
- Have 2 years of post secondary education, or
- Be a high school graduate and pass the OGET test
Training and Experience
- Previous work with youth, and/or intercultural experiences, desirable
Essential Job Functions
- Participate in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning
- Congduct learning exercises with small groups of students
- Aid teachers with classroom activities
- Aid in maintaining neat, safe work areas
- Maintain records for evaluation of student's behavior and performance
- Provide escort and assistance to students as necessary
- Adhere to Board of Education Policy and assigned schedules
- Maintain confidentiality
- Interpret/translate for students and teachers and support family communication with the school
- Aid Limited English Proficient students with learning English and subject area concepts
