Tier 1 (Title I) Paraprofessional Requirements

  • Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education (minimum of 48 hours of college coursework)
  • Obtained an associate's degree (or higher)
  • Taken and passed the WorkKeys, ParaPro, or Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET)
  • An Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Certificate is also required
  • Willingness to complete the Tier 2 (Special Education) Paraprofessional Requirements and obtain the Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Certificate within 120 days of employment
  • OSBI background check must be completed every five years to remain in compliance

Tier 2 (Special Education) Paraprofessional Requirements

  • Complete the Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Training at a Career Tech Center, state-approved LEA training, or training modules in PEPPER
  • Complete and maintain CPR and First Aid certification
  • Complete training in Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Complete an additional six (6) hours of professional development in Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens each school year following initial certification

Education and Credentials

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED; Must hold an associate degree or have 2 years of post secondary education, or be a high school graduate and pass a PARAPRO or OGET test
  • All teacher assistants newly hired and working or at a site supported with Title funds must:
    • Have an associate degree
    • Have 2 years of post secondary education, or
    • Be a high school graduate and pass the OGET test

Training and Experience

  • Previous work with youth, and/or intercultural experiences, desirable

Essential Job Functions

  • Participate in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning
  • Congduct learning exercises with small groups of students
  • Aid teachers with classroom activities
  • Aid in maintaining neat, safe work areas
  • Maintain records for evaluation of student's behavior and performance
  • Provide escort and assistance to students as necessary
  • Adhere to Board of Education Policy and assigned schedules
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Interpret/translate for students and teachers and support family communication with the school
  • Aid Limited English Proficient students with learning English and subject area concepts
