General Description
The Bus Monitor ensures the safety of children as they are transported from the Neighborhood (proximity) School to the schools where the English Language Learner Programs are located. Bus Monitors are assigned at the bus stop or on the bus and work a morning and an afternoon shift. Hours of work and schedule are determined on an annual basis based on program enrollment and program needs.
Description Of Duties
- Aid children in getting on the bus and to assigned seats
- Take attendance as children enter the bus
- Ensure that students have appropriate name tags
- Ensure children remain seated during transport
- Maintain order and behavior of children on the bus so the driver will not be distracted from safe driving
- Report any unsafe behavior to the Principal and ELL Director
- Maintain a positive and calm attitude and use a quiet voice while on the job
- Absorb children in getting off the bus safely
- Release children only to persons who are parents/guardians or those designated by the parent/guardian
- Afford only students in grades three and up to walk to their homes from the neighborhood without an adult with parental permission
- Check the bus to assure there are no children remaining on the bus at the end of each route
- Inform ELL Office of any changes in ridership
- Inform ELL Office upon Monitor absence as soon as possible
- Sign in at the school office at the start of the run; sign out at the school office at the end of the run on a daily basis
- Perform other duties as required
Qualifications
- Fluency in English and ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to maintain a safe and orderly environment
- Ability to establish good working relationships with children, parents, bus driver, and other staff
- Bilingual preferred
