26-102; Bus Driver- Special Needs; Transportation; 0.625 FTE; Probationary (Multiple Positions)

FTE: .625 (5 hours per day), non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Transportation.

About the role

Provide safe and efficient transportation so that students participating in Special Programs may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district's curriculum. Work is characterized by the ability to follow routes and make independent decisions that align project objectives with department and district goals.

Responsibilities

• Follow and maintain knowledge of all applicable District policies and procedures.
• Drive school buses or any district Pupil Transporting Vehicle on regularly scheduled routes and other district-approved trips, including vehicles equipped for wheelchairs and other special needs.
• Transport students with special needs inside and outside the district.
• Complete and implement training regarding special needs of students; demonstrate sensitivity to students being transported.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding students being transported.
• Obey all traffic laws and observe State of Oregon standards and regulations regarding the transportation of students, as well as Defensive Driving Techniques.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of all state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of the vehicle.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the location, operation, purpose, and use of all controls, instruments, gauges, and emergency equipment on the vehicle.
• Demonstrate necessary physical skills and mental ability to safely and efficiently operate the vehicle.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of state, local, and district regulations involving the responsibilities of bus drivers, including student management, discipline procedures, and public relations.
• Exhibit familiarity with any route required to drive.
• Exercise sound judgment in driving under varying weather conditions, on all types of roads, and in changing traffic conditions.
• Operate and service school bus equipment and accessories such as doors, windows, radios, fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, tire chains, first aid and body fluid kits, and seat belt cutters.
• Coordinate with other school districts and parents regarding daily route schedules and school operations; may plan and develop route changes as necessary.
• Follow accident/emergency procedures and exhibit competency to handle emergency situations, including first aid.
• Manage students efficiently; maintain safety and order when students are on the bus; report undisciplined students to the appropriate administrator.
• Keep assigned bus clean inside; check bus before each operation for mechanical defects; notify the transportation supervisor in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
• Pick up and discharge students only at authorized stops; transport only those students on the route list or those who have obtained a bus pass.
• Report all accidents and complete required reports and paperwork accurately and timely.
• Report all incidents needing attention to the Transportation Director on a Miscellaneous Incident Report.
• Implement decisions within ASD established policies and procedures while working collaboratively with others.
• Professionally represent the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students; resolve conflict professionally.
• Work collaboratively with District and building administrators and other department staff to provide reliable service to customers.
• Communicate clearly with coworkers and other staff; participate as an effective team member; provide impeccable customer service.
• Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required; attend work regularly and punctually.
• Annually pass the District's required online training by the assigned due date.

Requirements

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
• Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
• Ability to interact calmly with students and maintain concentration and patience in noisy and distracting conditions.
• Sincere desire to work with students and become familiar with the handicapping condition of each student.
• Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English; follow written directions; possess basic telephone and office skills.
• Ability to perform basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations.
• Basic computer skills, including the ability to receive, send, and communicate by email, utilize the District's sub-calling software, and complete basic data entry on a computer.
• Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members; exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant distractions.
• Current valid Oregon Commercial Driver's license, first aid card, and ability to obtain an Oregon Department of Education School Bus Drivers Certificate.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to talk or hear.
• Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
• Required to sit for prolonged periods of time.
• Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must regularly lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
• Assist well and/or physically impaired students on and off the bus through the passenger service door.
• Demonstrate sufficient strength and agility to move about in the bus to assist students with evacuation in case of emergency.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, and peripheral vision.

Work Environment

• Moderate noise level, occasionally high depending upon student population and activities.
• Occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions.
• May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.

Pay

$18.79 - $23.23 per hour.
