256779 (SM) Specialist Biomedical Scientist (or Annex 21)

This is a Trainee post covered by Annex 21. Pay is calculated as a percentage of the Band 6 fully qualified rate (£36,875) based on time remaining until completion of training:

• Up to 12 months prior: 75% of pay band maximum
• More than 1 year but less than 2 years prior: 70% of pay band maximum
• More than 2 years but less than 3 years prior: 65% of pay band maximum
• More than 3 years prior: 60% of pay band maximum

About the role

Five full-time posts (part-time applicants considered) for HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientists in Cellular Pathology at NHS Lothian’s Royal Infirmary and Western General Hospitals in Edinburgh. The department supports the Scottish Liver and Pancreas Transplant Unit and the East of Scotland Kidney Transplant Unit.

Responsibilities

• Rotate through all aspects of the service, including routine histology laboratories and Immunohistochemistry
• Participate in specialist histology rotations: Electron Microscopy, Muscle Histochemistry, and Moh’s clinic
• Engage in BMS Dissection roles and reporting training
• Participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and further education opportunities (e.g., MSc, IBMS qualifications)
• Join the Pathology out-of-hours service, including on-call and Public Holiday cover (mandatory after the Annex 21 training period)
• Complete the IBMS Specialist Diploma Portfolio in Cellular Pathology within the agreed timeframe

Requirements

• HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
• Relevant histology knowledge and sound practical experience in Histology
• Flexible approach to work and ability to rotate through all service aspects
• Commitment to participating in the on-call rota and Public Holiday cover

Desirable Qualifications

• Commenced IBMS Specialist Diploma Portfolio in Cellular Pathology
