2027 PhD Graduate - Next Gen Image Processing/Sensing
About the role
We are seeking a PhD physicist, mathematician, or engineer to help develop algorithms and assess the performance of next-generation infrared and optical sensor systems for land, air, and sea-launched interceptors. You will influence the development of powerful sensor algorithms and tackle vital missile defense challenges in a creative and collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
- Derive requirements, perform trade studies, and analyze the performance of advanced sensor systems.
- Develop, implement, test, and verify high-fidelity, physics-based simulations of sensors and environments.
- Act as APL's representative with sponsors and contractors.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve difficult problems in air and missile defense.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications if you:
- Will graduate with a PhD by your starting date in electrical engineering, applied math, physics, computer science, or a related field.
- Are knowledgeable or have research experience in one or more of the following: simulating or analyzing infrared or visible signals, environments, or sensors.
- Are proficient in one or more of the following programming languages: MATLAB, C++, or Python.
- Have strong written and oral presentation skills.
- Are willing to travel up to 15% of the time as needed.
- Are able to obtain a Secret clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain clearance beyond Top Secret (U.S. citizenship required).
You'll go above and beyond if you have experience with imaging seekers or missile systems.

Pay
Annual salary range: $105,000 – $245,000. Actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training, skill level, and internal parity. Additional compensation may include bonuses, sign-on bonuses, relocation benefits, locality allowances, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
