The Northwest Office of Earthjustice, founded in 1971, has been dedicated to protecting the unique natural resources and environment of the Pacific Northwest since 1987. Our office has taken on numerous campaigns including protecting old-growth forests, promoting salmon recovery, improving air and water quality, and stopping fossil-fuel infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Work with attorneys on case development and litigation strategy
  • Draft pleadings and briefs
  • Do legal research
  • Develop strategy and legal theories
  • Gather evidence
  • Attend client meetings and court proceedings

Compensation

The Earthjustice summer law clerkship is a paid position. The stipend amount is contingent upon external funding, such as from a law school's summer funding program. The initial stipend is $1,382.00 per week, minus any external funding and taxes. The program runs for 10 weeks at full-time hours (37.5 hours/week).

How to Apply

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a U.S. law school through fall 2027 and be available for a 10-week summer 2027 commitment.
  • Summer law clerks must work from the U.S.
  • Submit a complete application via Jobvite by September 7, 2026.
  • Include a cover letter addressing: (1) relevant aspects of your background not reflected in your resume, (2) why you are drawn to Earthjustice’s mission and the teams for which you are applying, and (3) any particular environmental or public interest issues inspiring you.
  • Provide a recent legal writing sample of up to 10 pages, including a cover page indicating edits and feedback from others.
  • Submit an unofficial transcript.
