About the role

Teach skiing and/or snowboarding to groups or individuals of all ages and abilities in a fun learning environment. Instruction combines excellent class management, people skills, teaching techniques, technical demonstrations, and creativity.

Responsibilities

• Provide clear direction and on-hill instruction to snow-sport students.
• Teach proper technique appropriate to each student’s ability level.
• Instruct group and private lessons of varying age and skill levels.
• Maintain personal gear in safe, functional, and attractive condition.
• Assess skill and ability levels and organize groups efficiently.
• Follow the Responsibility Code and reduce risk for guests on varied terrain in winter weather.
• Promote safety, emphasizing the skier responsibility code as top priority.
• Verify students have proper safety equipment and functioning gear.
• Confirm guests have purchased a lift ticket before lessons begin.
• Evaluate and oversee the development of each student’s skills.
• Develop strategies enabling students to reach their individual goals.
• Supervise children at all times in class; communicate with parents and/or chaperones.
• Provide instruction in a professional and effective manner.
• Inspect and monitor trail conditions to reduce risk for lessons.
• Report unsafe ski hazards to appropriate departments as needed.
• Assist students in loading and unloading chair lifts and surface lifts.
• Wear a clean and tidy uniform while working.
• Prepare all required records and/or reports for lessons taught.
• Attend mandatory staff training and abide by the BE Staff Handbook.
• Continually learn and update teaching, technical, and skiing/snowboarding skills based on PSIA/AASI standards.
• Maintain attendance and punctuality.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by Snow Sports Directors and Managers.

Requirements

• Intermediate to advanced skiing/snowboarding ability.
• Effective teaching skills working with children and adults.
• Act as a role model; motivate and positively influence students.
• Maintain a positive and professional attitude.
• Adaptable and willing to learn and improve personal skills.
• Display mature judgment skills in decision-making.
• PSIA/AASI certification or equivalent experience preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
• Basic proficiency with email and internet websites.
• Applicants must be at least 16 years old; Jr Instructor applicants must be 14 (unpaid apprenticeship).
• CORI/ProScreen background check required prior to hiring.
• New hires must complete the Instructor Training Course (ITC), which includes at-home work and on-snow assessments. Job offers are made after ITC.
• Attendance at ski or snowboard clinics required for all instructors.

Physical, mental, and emotional demands

• Frequent verbal and written communication.
• Good physical condition including flexibility, strength, and endurance.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs in awkward positions on steep and slippery surfaces.
• Mentally attentive and focused at all times.
• Able to adapt to climate and work in extreme weather conditions.
• Able to teach for multiple hours in a row without a break.

Schedule

• Frequent evening shifts for school programs and family nights.
• Frequent weekend and holiday shifts.
• Must be available for “Peak Holiday Periods” including Christmas Week, MLK Weekend, and Presidents Week.

Lineup Supervisors, Snow Sports Manager, Admin Manager, and Assistant Director.
