About the Role

The Special Education Teacher supports the instructional process by developing students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living. This role involves supervising students, developing and delivering lesson plans, collaborating with staff and administrators, and communicating with parents about student progress.

Responsibilities

• Administer developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency and develop individual learning plans.
• Provide first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering).
• Advise parents/guardians on student progress, expectations, and methods for improvement.
• Assess student progress in behavioral, motor, communication, academic, and vocational skills.
• Collaborate with staff, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes.
• Counsel students to improve performance, health, problem-solving, and personal issues.
• Demonstrate pedagogical approaches tailored to individual student needs.
• Differentiate classroom instruction to address individualized learning programs.
• Direct assistant teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and student workers.
• Instruct students in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
• Maintain confidential and non-confidential records in compliance with legal requirements.
• Manage student behavior to ensure a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Monitor students in classrooms, playgrounds, field trips, and other settings.
• Order supplies and equipment as needed.
• Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and PLC teams to review data and instructional practices.
• Prepare written materials (e.g., attendance records, IEPs, anecdotal notes) to document progress.
• Report health and safety issues to administrators and appropriate agencies.
• Respond to emergency situations and inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators.
• Serve as case manager for special education students, managing IEPs.
• Support classroom teachers in implementing curriculum and individual student plans.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a job-related area.
• Arizona Teaching Certificate with appropriate certification in core content area.
• SEI Endorsement required.
• CPR Certificate, First Aid Certificate, and CPI Certificate (or ability to obtain district-sponsored training).
• Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card and criminal background clearance.

Skills & Qualifications

• Skills: Administering assessments, operating office equipment and software, maintaining accurate records, and preparing instructional materials.
• Knowledge: Special education policies, regulations, and laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson planning; child development stages; behavioral management strategies; and instructional methods.
• Abilities:

  • Establish constructive relationships, adapt to changing priorities, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Physical demands: Significant lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fine finger dexterity. Job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing.

Work Environment

The role is performed under minimal temperature variations with some exposure to risk of injury or illness. Job-related experience is desired.
