About the Role

The Reading Specialist supports the instructional process by serving as an elementary school teacher with specific responsibility for supervising students, developing and delivering instruction within established curriculum guidelines, collaborating with staff and administrators, and communicating with parents regarding student progress.

This position reports to the Site Administrator.

Responsibilities

  • Attend Title I site specialist meetings and submit required state and federal compliance documents.
  • Attend reading specialist meetings; collaborate with other reading specialists and school administration to update teachers’ literacy practices, plan intervention and data discussions, and inform teachers of district and state literacy initiatives and laws.
  • Administer developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
  • Advise parents and guardians on student progress, expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
  • Assess student progress and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and support the school improvement plan.
  • Counsel students to improve performance, problem-solving techniques, and address personal issues.
  • Demonstrate pedagogical approaches that engage learners and address individual student requirements.
  • Differentiate academic work to provide instructional materials that address individualized learning within established lesson plans.
  • Direct instructional assistants to provide an effective reading program and address individual student needs.
  • Facilitate student learning to achieve success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through defined lesson plans.
  • Instruct students to improve their success in Reading through a defined course of study.
  • Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitor students in educational environments (e.g., classroom, hallways) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participate in reviewing data and instructional practices.
  • Attend a variety of meetings (e.g., staff, district) to convey and gather required information.
  • Prepare written materials (e.g., grades, attendance, anecdotal records) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
  • Report health and safety issues to the assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g., fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate social behaviors).
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns or direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Respond to inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators to resolve issues, provide information, or direction.
  • Serve as the Dyslexia Training Designee (DTD) to support educators in instructional practices and interventions for all readers, including those showing characteristics of dyslexia.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a job-related area.
  • Arizona Teaching Certificate.
  • Appropriate certification in Core Content Area.
  • SEI Endorsement.
  • Reading Endorsement.
  • Completion of required Dyslexia Training Designee (DTD) training per state statute.
  • Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Criminal background clearance.

Skills

  • Applying assessment instruments and operating standard office equipment, including software applications.
  • Teaching Arizona State recognized standards and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Performing Reading interventions and analyzing situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Knowledge of appropriate codes, policies, regulations, and laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
  • Ability to schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather, collate, and classify data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with diverse individuals and data, adapt to changing work priorities, maintain confidentiality, and exhibit tact and patience.
  • Problem-solving skills to analyze issues and create action plans, including independent interpretation of guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain constructive relationships and work flexible hours.

Work Environment

The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, as well as significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. The job involves 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing. Work is performed under some temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
