About the Role

The Gifted Specialist provides instruction to gifted students in grades 4-6 in Mathematics and Language Arts, and supports gifted cluster teachers at the site. Responsibilities include developing lesson plans, delivering instruction, collaborating with staff, and communicating with parents regarding student progress. This position reports to the Site Administrator and Director of Gifted Education.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction to gifted identified students in grades 4-6 in Mathematics and Language Arts.
• Work with the Director of Gifted Education to support department goals.
• Attend Gifted Specialist in-services and district staff development opportunities related to gifted education.
• Oversee nomination for gifted testing at the school level.
• Preside over monthly gifted cluster teacher meetings and provide staff development opportunities.
• Gather data for program evaluation purposes.
• Administer subject-specific assessments to assess student competency and develop individual learning plans.
• Advise parents/guardians on student progress, expectations, and methods for improvement.
• Assess student progress and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
• Collaborate with staff, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes.
• Counsel students to improve performance, health, problem-solving, and personal issues.
• Demonstrate pedagogical approaches that engage learners and address individual needs.
• Differentiate classroom instruction to address individualized learning within lesson plans.
• Facilitate student learning to achieve success in academics, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
• Instruct students to improve academic success through defined coursework.
• Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Monitor students in various educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips).
• Organize age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities to ensure student participation.
• Participate in PLC teams to review data and instructional practices.
• Attend meetings (staff, district, IEPs, 504s) to convey and gather required information.
• Document student progress through grades, attendance, and anecdotal records.
• Report health and safety issues to administrators and appropriate agencies.
• Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
• Respond to inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

• Minimum two years of experience teaching gifted students (pull-out, cluster, or self-contained).
• Knowledge of Mathematics and Reading standards-based content.
• Bachelor’s degree in a job-related area.
• Arizona Teacher Certificate.
• Arizona Gifted Endorsement.
• SEI Endorsement.
• Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Skills

• Ability to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks, including applying assessment instruments and operating standard office equipment.
• Proficiency in teaching Arizona State recognized standards and preparing/maintaining accurate records.
• Knowledge of algebra, geometry, lesson plan requirements, child development stages, and behavioral management strategies.
• Ability to schedule activities, gather and classify data, and use job-related equipment.
• Flexibility to work with diverse individuals and adapt to changing priorities.
• Problem-solving skills to analyze issues and create action plans.
• Ability to establish constructive relationships, maintain confidentiality, and work flexible hours.

Work Environment

The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fine finger dexterity. The position involves 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing. Work is performed under some temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury or illness.
