Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is seeking a 0.93 FTE Educational Assistant 1 for the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program. ECFE’s mission is to strengthen families through education and support of all parents by providing the best possible environment for the healthy growth and development of their children. The program focuses on child development and parent/child relationships to set the stage for children's school success.

Qualifications

  • One of the following:
    • Two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 semester or 90 quarter credits), or
    • An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree, or
    • Passing score of 460 (or higher) on the ParaEducator Assessment.
  • Basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Ability to relate to students with warmth, friendliness, and understanding.
  • Ability to develop good relationships with students and staff.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of others.
  • Ability to lift (required for some positions).
  • Punctuality and consistent attendance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team with classroom teachers, support staff, and other paraprofessionals.
  • Some positions may require basic signing skills for hearing-impaired children.

Preferred: Experience working with children with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing instructional plans and lessons for students.
  • Support the day-to-day operation of the school program by:
    • Preparing behavior modification charts, point charts, bonus coupons, and homework sheets.
    • Monitoring student attendance.
    • Collecting data and performing other related activities.
  • Record student progress on appropriate documents and maintain official school district student records.
  • Assist the teacher in classroom preparation and housekeeping, including cleaning, arranging, or storing materials, furniture, equipment, and files.
  • Work directly with individual students and groups in daily activities and assignments, providing direction and assistance.
  • Monitor and manage student behavior by providing appropriate activities, attention, directions, pacing, cues, feedback, and consequences.
  • Relate to students in a patient, supportive, and warm manner; intervene calmly and empathetically in crisis situations.
  • Participate in school-related activities outside the classroom, such as home visits, family nights, or field trips.
  • Collaborate with staff, other professionals, and parents.
  • Participate in staffing and conferences related to students and the program, including reporting on data collected, providing feedback, and sharing pupil progress (evening meetings as needed).
  • Assist the instructional team in providing individualized instruction by:
    • Tutoring students who need extra help.
    • Providing enrichment activities.
    • Supervising study sessions.
    • Organizing and implementing computer-based supplemental instruction.
  • Assist in the development and organization of program activities and services by reporting student observations, gathering information, and providing suggestions.
  • Attend team and school staff meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Pay

This is a temporary position with a pay range of $21.94 - $32.02 per hour, up to step fourteen (14) of the EA1 salary schedule. The maximum hiring step is EA1 step 14. The full salary schedule is available in the Educational Assistants contract.

Schedule

This position works varying hours per week, up to 37.5 hours.

Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire; official transcripts must be submitted within 30 days of the start date. Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside the United States.

Reference checks and a criminal background investigation will be completed as a condition of hire for all new employees and for former employees who have not been employed by the District for more than six months.
