Temporary position at Shea Middle School for the 2026 boys basketball season (8/31/2026 – 10/22/2026). Two positions available. Salary: $1,909 per position.

About the Role

The Head Coach designs and implements the athletic program for the assigned sport in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. Responsibilities include supervising coaching personnel and students, using sound instructional techniques, serving as a positive role model, and acting as a liaison between the school, community, and other organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Assess student athletes to provide feedback and determine team placement.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences to stay informed about role-related information.
  • Conduct supporting activities such as parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets.
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes (e.g., strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention).
  • Create game strategies by analyzing opponent strengths, weaknesses, and athlete abilities.
  • Guide and mentor other coaching personnel on instructional techniques and supervision.
  • Identify program needs and recommend expenditures for equipment, supplies, and activities.
  • Implement practice schedules, facility usage, and staff assignments for efficient program operation.
  • Instruct student athletes to promote growth in skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain records such as statistics, insurance forms, permission slips, schedules, and equipment inventories.
  • Monitor student athletes’ academic eligibility and provide intervention as needed (e.g., counseling, tutoring).
  • Oversee assistant coaches, student managers, and volunteers.
  • Promote the athletic program through off-season clinics, skill camps, and community engagement.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media, and college representatives.
  • Keep the athletic director informed of issues impacting the program (e.g., liability, parent concerns).
  • Provide supervision for all athletes and students involved in the program.
  • Explain and enforce the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct with all athletes.
  • Maintain high standards of personal conduct and serve as a role model.
  • Ensure all coaches, paid or volunteer, are cleared through the PVUSD Human Resources Department.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • Adapt to changing work priorities and administer first aid.
  • Apply pertinent laws, codes, policies, and regulations.
  • Coordinate activities with schools, districts, and agencies.
  • Organize and communicate information effectively.
  • Oversee financial transactions.
  • Knowledge of community support organizations, public relations, and equipment used in the program.
  • Understanding of injury prevention, treatment protocols, and safety practices.
  • Familiarity with participant eligibility, attendance, and discipline guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Handle frequent interruptions and exhibit strong leadership.
  • Maintain confidentiality and meet deadlines.
  • Model and enforce sportsmanship and motivate student athletes.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and team building.
  • Travel to off-campus athletic events and competitions.
  • Work extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Job-related experience is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One of the following certifications:
    • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate,
    • Valid Arizona Substitute Certificate, or
    • NFHS Level 2 Certificate (National Federation of State High Schools).
  • IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Criminal Background Clearance.

Work Environment

The role involves occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, as well as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crawling. Fine finger dexterity is required. The job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. Work is performed under some temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Pay

$1,909 for the season.

Schedule

Season runs from August 31, 2026, to October 22, 2026. Extended hours may include evenings and weekends.
