2026-27 Assistant Baseball Coach - Horizon HS

Temporary position for the 2027 baseball season (2/8/2027 – 5/8/2027) at Horizon High School. Addendum amount: $1,215.50 (0.5 FTE). All coaches must be district-approved volunteers.

About the role

The Assistant Coach designs and implements program activities in accordance with applicable rules and regulations, supervises student athletes during all aspects of participation, and serves as a positive role model. This position reports to the Athletic Director and is assigned to a specific level (Varsity, JV/Frosh, or Junior High).

Responsibilities

  • Assess student athletes to provide feedback on performance and determine team placement.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences to receive and convey information.
  • Communicate with parents, students, officials, administrators, and the community.
  • Instruct student athletes to promote growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain records such as game statistics, insurance forms, permission slips, schedules, and equipment inventories to comply with district, athletic conference, and state requirements.
  • Manage uniforms, equipment, and school facilities to ensure safety and responsibility.
  • Monitor student athletes' academic eligibility, complying with AIA requirements and providing intervention (e.g., counseling, tutoring) as needed.
  • Supervise student athletes during all participation activities to minimize injury risk.
  • Teach sports techniques, playing rules, strategies, and tactics to prepare the team for competition.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience.
  • Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (www.azdps.gov/services/public/fingerprint).

Skills

  • Technical Skills: Administer first aid, apply laws/codes/policies, organize and communicate information, and use relevant equipment.
  • Knowledge: Basic math, interpreting technical information, writing technical materials, analyzing situations, and understanding:
    • Equipment used in the program.
    • Injury prevention and treatment protocols.
    • Pertinent laws, codes, policies, and regulations.
    • Participant eligibility, attendance, and discipline guidelines.
    • Public relations protocols and professional standards.
    • Safety practices and procedures.
  • Abilities:
    • Schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather and collate data.
    • Work independently and collaboratively with diverse groups.
    • Communicate effectively with individuals of varied educational and cultural backgrounds.
    • Handle frequent interruptions and meet deadlines.
    • Exhibit strong leadership and maintain confidentiality.
    • Model and enforce sportsmanship and discipline.
    • Motivate student athletes.
    • Set priorities and work extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Work Environment

  • Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fine finger dexterity.
  • Typical work posture: 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing.
  • Exposure to temperature extremes and risk of injury/illness.
