About the role

This position is primarily responsible for providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for ensuring students' success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living. Responsibilities include supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students to improve their success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Monitor students in a variety of educational environments to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Manage student behavior to ensure a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Assess student progress toward objectives, expectations, and/or goals, providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve the quality of student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
  • Administer developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency levels and/or develop individual learning plans.
  • Counsel students to improve performance, health status, problem-solving techniques, and address personal issues.
  • Demonstrate methods required to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program addressing individual student requirements.
  • Direct student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and/or student workers to ensure an effective classroom program addressing individual student needs.
  • Facilitate student learning to achieve success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through defined lesson plans.
  • Maintain manual and electronic documents, files, and records to provide up-to-date information and historical reference in accordance with administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Participate in meetings and workshops to convey and gather information required to perform job functions.
  • Prepare materials documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Report health and safety issues to assigned administrators and appropriate agencies to maintain student safety and comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Respond to emergency situations by resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel.
  • Respond to inquiries from various sources to resolve issues, provide information, and/or direction.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Possession of Missouri Teaching K-12 Art Certification.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Clearance, with results satisfactory to the District.

Skills

  • Knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios.
  • Ability to read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and facilitate group discussions.
  • Analytical skills to define issues, draw conclusions, and create action plans.
  • Knowledge of appropriate codes, policies, regulations, and laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
  • Skill in performing multiple, technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions.
  • Skill in applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment, including pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather, collate, and classify data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups; handle data of varied types and purposes; and utilize job-related equipment.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to improve work processes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, set priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Work environment is primarily indoors, with moderate noise and temperature levels.
  • Light work requiring exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • Must possess the ability to perceive sounds, make rational decisions, express or exchange ideas by spoken word, and perform substantial movements with hands, wrists, and/or fingers.
  • Required physical abilities include balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, manual dexterity, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
