2026-2027 SY - Special Education Bus Attendant

About the Role

An individual employed by the Gallup McKinley County School District to help the school bus driver and students. A school bus assistant shall be provided on school buses when necessary, when required by law or regulation, or when required by a student's IEP.

Receives general direction from Transportation Foreman, Transportation Supervisor, and the Transportation Director or Coordinator. Perform related duties and responsibilities as directed.

Responsibilities

• Clock in for duty on time and be ready for work.
• Have a current and valid driver's license, medical examiner's certificate, and first aid card.
• Cooperate with the transportation administrator's compliance with 49 CFR Part 382.
• Follow the assigned bus route, field/activity trip rules in a safe, professional, and timely manner.
• Use bus management skills while on assigned bus routes or field/activity trips.
• Address student safety on the school bus.
• Ensure no students remain on the bus when the bus route is completed.
• Participate in emergency evacuation drills for school buses.
• Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections for school-owned activity SUV vehicles unless documented by other qualified personnel.
• Complete eight hours per semester of in-service training approved by the transportation administrator.
• Document and report incidents to your supervisor.
• Assist students with special needs, keep bus documents updated, and attend transportation meetings when scheduled.
• Keep the bus clean and adhere to proper use of seatbelts, harnesses, wheelchair restraints, and loading/unloading procedures.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge: School bus assistants must have knowledge of customer service, transportation tablets and routing software, student accountability, de-escalation/student management, methods and techniques of bus cleanliness, incident reporting, proper use of seatbelts/harnesses/wheelchair restraints, and loading/unloading procedures.

Abilities: Communicate clearly, participate in school bus safety drills, administer first aid, manage de-escalation and student behavior, report incidents to supervisors, and adhere to GMCS policies and state regulations.

Physical Requirements

• Perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired.
• Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the bus yard and school bus, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling.

Equipment and Technology

• Clock in and out using a time clock kiosk.
• Enter leave requests on Frontline.
• Use tablets on school buses.

Work Environment

• Work with various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.
• Handle routine interruptions; flexibility and patience are required.
• Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision.
• After-hours work may be required.

Qualifications

• Must meet all training and certification requirements.
• Must have an interest in and empathy for children.
• Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old.
• Must submit a criminal background check.
• Must submit a driving record from the motor vehicle department.

Pay

Minimum: $23,019.00 | Maximum: $31,534.00

Schedule

6 hours per day | Contract length: 192 days
