About the Role
To assist the teacher or assigned professional in daily classroom activities, including supporting students with lesson assignments and homework, maintaining classroom discipline, and performing clerical duties.
Responsibilities
- Assist the classroom teacher or assigned professional in delivering course objectives and following state and District Curriculum guidelines.
- Help implement lesson plans, grade assignments, and maintain records.
- Maintain appropriate files and records, including attendance and grades, ensuring confidentiality.
- Assist students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to reinforce learning concepts.
- Operate and care for classroom equipment, including audio-visual and office machines, to prepare instructional materials.
- Provide instructional support to students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments.
- Assist the teacher in teaching rules of conduct and maintaining order in the classroom and on the playground.
- Help maintain a classroom environment conducive to age-appropriate learning.
- Assist in coordinating class field trips.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work as established by the teacher and aligned with state and District guidelines.
- Perform related duties as required.
Marginal Functions
- Under the supervision of the teacher, may counsel pupils on academic or behavioral issues and discuss progress with parents.
Requirements
Knowledge of:
- Basic principles of early childhood development, including human growth and development, and special education.
- Basic principles of classroom management and modern, effective teaching practices.
- Modern office and classroom equipment, including computers.
- Basic principles of student growth, development, and learning to enhance student understanding.
- Basic clerical procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
- Principles and procedures of filing and record-keeping.
- Cultural diversities of the local area.
Ability To:
- Perform general clerical work, including maintaining files.
- Operate standard office machines, including computers.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Communicate with students to enhance learning and understanding.
- Apply basic principles of student growth, development, and learning.
- Nurture, motivate, teach, and influence children.
- Promote positive student behavior and a safe, healthy environment.

Qualifications
Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical path includes:
- Experience: One year of related teaching assistance experience is desirable.
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalency.
- Licensure: Level III Educational Assistant license from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED).
Working Conditions
- On-site attendance is mandatory.

- Essential functions may require moderate to heavy lifting, standing, and walking for long periods.
