2026-2027 Substitute School Nurse (LPN) Pool ($22.29-$25.25 per hour)- GCPS
Hourly rate of $22.29–$25.25. Non-exempt position, generally 7.1 hours per day but may vary based on system needs. Supervised administratively by the Director of Student Services, clinically by the Nurse Manager, and directly by the Building Principal. Availability required for the 2026–2027 school year.
About the role
The School LPN, under the supervision of the School Nurse and school-based administrator, provides delegated school health services to students, staff, families, and school visitors. The LPN works collaboratively with the school nurse, adheres to health services policies and procedures, and uses good judgment within established guidelines. The school nurse evaluates performance. The LPN must comply with all confidentiality laws under COMAR, HIPAA, and FERPA, sharing health room information only on a legitimate need-to-know basis.
Responsibilities
- Provides first aid and emergency care to students, staff, and visitors following regulations and procedures established by Garrett County Public School System, Garrett County Health Department, Maryland State Department of Education, and Maryland Department of Health.
- Carries out delegated nursing tasks for students and staff.
- Follows federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures related to school health services.
- Assists with state-mandated screening programs after training from the school nurse.
- Follows laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to control communicable diseases within the school setting.
- Carries out health services procedures established by Garrett County Public School System.
- Observes student health, psychosocial, and other needs and refers students appropriately.
- Maintains accurate, confidential, and appropriate records following established procedures.
- Administers medication as a Certified Medication Technician (CMT) under the supervision of a Case Managing/Delegating Nurse, including emergency medications like Epinephrine when trained.
- Identifies and documents students with health problems and refers them to the school nurse.
- Follows health care plans developed by the school nurse.
- Communicates necessary medical information promptly to appropriate school personnel, parents/guardians, and the school nurse while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintains emergency procedure information for students and staff.
- Supports health promotion for students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Helps maintain a substitute notebook in the event of an absence.
- Assists in maintaining a safe and healthful school environment by identifying and reporting safety or environmental concerns.
- Participates in the implementation of a school evacuation plan.
- Participates in student services programs and teams in collaboration with the school nurse.
- Participates in professional development activities and training.
- Provides a supportive atmosphere for students and staff while ensuring appropriate health room use.
- Establishes and maintains open communication and a cooperative relationship with students, staff, parents, and the community while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintains adequate supplies and keeps the health suite clean and orderly.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- CNA certification preferred.
- CMT certification preferred.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently within policy guidelines.
- Discretion and good judgment in handling sensitive information.
- Ability to accept supervisory direction.
- Ability to stay calm under adverse circumstances and calm others under stress.
- Ability to relate effectively to children, parents, and educational personnel.

Pay
Hourly rate of $22.29–$25.25.
