About the Role
To assist the teacher in maintaining appropriate classroom activities and environment in order that students may learn effectively.
Responsibilities
- Assists in the general supervision of students in the halls, restrooms, playgrounds, or any other area of the school campus.
- Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students.
- Works with individual students or groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
- Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
- Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
- Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Assists with the supervision of students as assigned.
- Assists in planning and conducting field trips.
- Assists the teacher in materials preparation and in the instructional planning process.
- Attends parent-teacher conferences unless directed otherwise.
- Keeps bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up to date.
- Assists with such group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
- Assists students in the library or media center as needed.
- Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and makeup work as assigned by the teacher.
- Checks and records student's attendance.
- Alerts the regular teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student.
- Substitutes for short duration for the regular classroom teacher.
- Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
- Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of a fully licensed teacher.
- May serve in other approved capacities such as, but not limited to: ISS Monitor, Lab Assistant.
- Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
- Supports the Hattiesburg Public School District Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan.
- Performs other duties assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Passing scores on the "WorkKeys" Test or completion of 48 college credits.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Other requirements as outlined by the Board and the Administration.
Evaluation
Annually.
