About the role
The Reading Specialist will support the curriculum and provide training to teachers and staff.
Responsibilities
- Identify literature for use in all content areas in support of the curriculum.
- Provide curriculum support and training for all teachers and continuous staff development.
- Model and coach instructional methods in a variety of settings (whole group and small group).
- Analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs.
- Select instructional materials to meet student needs.
- Participate in collaborative instructional planning.
- Conduct classroom visitations and provide feedback to teachers and administrators.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and the Department of Education.
- Affiliate with the planning and delivery of parent workshops and informational sessions involving the language arts program.
- Facilitate integrated and concept-based instruction aligned with content standards and objectives.
Requirements
- Delaware State Certification as a Reading Specialist.
- Valid Delaware Initial, Continuing, or Advanced License.
- Master's degree in Reading from an NCATE/CAEP-specialty organization recognized educator preparation program.
- Education Requirements: Must meet one of the selections provided in the qualifications section.
- One of the following: Assessment and Instruction in Writing, Assessment and Instruction in Reading, Practicum in Reading, Literacy in the Content Areas, Teaching English as a Second Language, Literacy Acquisition, Coaching Adult Learners.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, literature and other content areas taught.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
