About the Role

This position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each student skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing fundamental to effective communication and literate citizenship. The role fosters appreciation of literature, motivates students to read widely, develops critical judgment of mass media communications, and prepares students to meet the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) in English.

Responsibilities

• Teaches English language, literature, composition, reading, and journalism to secondary students using the curriculum designated by Newport News Public Schools.
• Instructs students in citizenship and subject matter as specified by state law and school administrative regulations.
• Adapts English materials and methods to develop sequential assignments and lesson plans that guide and challenge students.
• Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials aligned with the division’s instructional philosophy and course/SOL standards, providing individualized and small-group instruction.
• Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and maintains records including attendance, checklists, and census forms.
• Encourages independent thinking and original ideas in students.
• Assesses student progress in meeting English skills standards (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
• Establishes and maintains classroom behavior standards to ensure an orderly, productive environment.
• Identifies student needs and collaborates with professional staff to address learning, health, and attitude challenges.
• Communicates with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
• Supervises students during out-of-classroom activities.
• Participates in faculty committees and sponsors student activities.
• Administers testing in accordance with division practices.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
• Maintains professional competence through staff development, curriculum meetings, and other professional activities.
• Participates in student and parent activities, including PTA, student clubs, and after-school programs.
• Creates an effective learning environment through displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal or appropriate administrator.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or a related field.
• Eligibility for or possession of a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement to teach English.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
• Manual dexterity to operate a telephone and computer.
• Ability to see and read a computer screen and printed materials, with or without vision aids.
• Ability to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone.
• Ability to speak audibly so others may understand clearly in classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
• Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

Work is typically performed in a school/classroom environment, with occasional field trips. The noise level is usually moderate.

Supervision

Supervision may be exercised over instructional assistants, volunteers, and tutors. The position reports to the Principal.
