Job Summary

Position is responsible for assisting the school principal in the planning, organization, administration, and management of an assigned elementary school. Position assists with supervising of staff, creating a safe environment, monitoring curriculum, budget development, and other duties associated with the successful operation of an elementary school.

Essential Duties

  • Aids the school principal in the general administration of the school.
  • Aids with interpreting and enforcing all school board policies and administrative regulations.
  • Aids in developing, administering, and evaluating the elementary school curriculum and instructional programs at the assigned school.
  • Aids the school principal with supervising and monitoring student attendance, counseling, child studies, assessment, and other pupil services.
  • Counsels students and administers disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Coordinates standardized student-testing programs in the school.
  • Conferences with parents of students on a regular basis concerning discipline, academic achievement, and any other parental concerns.
  • Aids in organizing and supervising the school’s extracurricular program, intramural programs, & after school tutorial programs.
  • Aids the school principal in the supervision & performance evaluation of all staff assigned to the school.
  • Aids in the preparation of the master schedule, student schedules, school calendar, & other schedules as requested.
  • Aids in preparing and administering the school’s budget and finances.
  • Aids in the supervision of, and participates in, evening and weekend school sponsored activities, athletic events, and special meetings to include PTA board, community support meetings, and parent workshops.
  • Aids in school safety inspections, safety drill practice activities, and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Aids in preparing all required building reports and records.
  • Serves as principal in the absence of the school principal.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment at the assigned school by monitoring halls, school grounds, and pupil movement.
  • Aids in the development of good community relations, providing school tours, & working to create a positive image for the school.
  • Aids the school principal with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for vacancies within the assigned school.
  • Initiates and maintains effective liaisons with professional societies to keep abreast of developments & research in the profession.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.

Job Specifications

  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills And/or Abilities Required): Must possess a Master’s degree and be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in administration and supervision. Must possess at least three years of successful experience as a teacher with some experience at the elementary school level. Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of the current issues, principles, and practices in public school elementary education and the ability to apply them to the needs of a school. Must possess knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development, instructional practices, interpretation of test data, and budget development. Must possess the ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of an elementary school. Must possess the ability to plan and supervise the work of others. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public.
  • Working Conditions & Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
