About the role

The Special Education Assistant at Watauga Elementary School supports students with special needs or in special learning situations. This includes providing educational assistance, general physical assistance, assisting teachers, tutoring, monitoring student activities, and performing clerical tasks.

Responsibilities

• Provides educational assistance to students with special needs, disabilities, or special learning situations.
• Assists in preparing, modifying, and utilizing instructional materials to meet individual student needs.
• Aids in developing and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEPs).
• Assists with assessing students' physical, emotional, and educational development.
• Uses special educational strategies to improve students' development, perception, memory, language, cognition, and social/emotional skills.
• Identifies students who need vision or hearing screenings and works with parents to address learning impairments.
• Provides general physical assistance to students with disabilities, such as physical limitations, visual impairment, autism, or other disabilities.
• Assists with classroom activities, escorting students, and addressing hygiene and self-help issues.
• Assists teachers during absences, sets up and conducts class activities, and evaluates student performance.
• Tutors students in basic educational skills and develops lesson plans.
• Maintains order in common areas, monitors student behavior, mediates disputes, and handles disciplinary actions.
• Performs clerical tasks, such as answering phones, entering data, and organizing materials.
• Operates various equipment and tools, and communicates with supervisors, employees, and other stakeholders.
