About the Program

The Career Accelerator Program (CAP) gives high school juniors a head-start by connecting classroom learning with hands-on career exploration through a 20-hour “pre-internship.” After completing a series of classes that sharpen essential professional skills for today’s fast-changing workplace, students are matched with a local business. Over the course of four months, they spend 20 hours shadowing, learning, and working alongside professionals, gaining insights into career paths and workplace expectations.

CAP is offered exclusively in the Troy School District for high school juniors. The ideal CAP student demonstrates a strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and a genuine interest in exploring opportunities beyond the classroom.

Mentorship & Insight

Mentorship is at the heart of the program. Students gain firsthand insight by learning directly from professionals and seeing the wide range of opportunities that await them in the “world of work.” The program bridges classroom learning with real-world experience—something both students and parents consistently value.

Businesses also benefit by working with students, sharing their expertise, and gaining a fresh perspective on their own work. Many find the experience simple, rewarding, and a meaningful way to invest in the next generation of talent.

Program Statistics (2024-2025 Academic Year)

• 72 students participated in CAP (tripled from previous years)
• Eight hours of in-person CAP classes teaching core professional skills:

  • Attitude and outlook
  • Business communication
• Twenty hours over three months of individual on-site learning for each student during their pre-internship
• 33 CAP business hosts
• 1,440 total hours of professional business experience provided to students
