1st Grade Teacher

About the Role

Under general supervision, instructs students in academic and social skills in a manner that meets each student's individual needs, interests, and abilities. Assists in other school programs as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Supports and upholds the mission, vision, and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One to improve student outcomes.
• Interacts, communicates, and collaborates effectively with all stakeholders.
• Establishes a safe, supportive, positive, and productive learning environment.
• Operates general office and technology equipment needed for daily activities.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee and student information.
• Participates in professional meetings and training sessions as required.
• Requests and maintains materials needed for daily responsibilities; ensures safe storage and proper use of tools, equipment, and materials.
• Supervises student activities on the playground, in the lunchroom, during arrival/dismissal, and other assigned areas; maintains positive behavior support and classroom management systems.
• Demonstrates 21st-century teaching skills to foster independent, creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
• Designs and facilitates engaging, high-level learning experiences.
• Teaches concepts and skills based on state standards to support students' academic and personal development.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of formative and summative assessments; collaborates with staff to analyze assessment data and develop instructional strategies to close learning gaps.
• Prepares lesson plans, daily/weekly activity plans, assessments, material requisitions, discipline reports, and other records.
• Organizes classrooms and other settings for daily instruction.
• Uses personal computing devices and software applications for student record management, instructional efficiency, and professional development.
• Meets with parents, administrators, and school counselors to discuss student performance, social/emotional needs, behavior, and academic goals; issues progress reports and suggests interventions as appropriate.
• Supervises and provides guidance to instructional assistants (if applicable).
• Manages classroom materials and supplies budget (if applicable).
• Maintains and inventories equipment; reports malfunctions and safety issues.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or related field with previous student teaching experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Valid South Carolina Teaching License (any applicable area).
• Current government-issued identification.
• Ability to access reliable transportation.
• Knowledge of district policies, procedures, and activities related to the role.
• Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy and work independently.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with students, staff, and the community.
• Proficiency in personal computing, including word processing, email, spreadsheets, electronic file management, and presentation software.

Schedule

Full-time position during the school year, 8 hours per day, 190 days per year. Conditions of employment may be adjusted for part-time employees or those hired for less than a full school year.

Physical Demands

• Classroom work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to 25 pounds.
• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, talking, listening, and reaching with hands and arms.
• Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision.
• Occasional pushing/pulling of furniture or materials.
• Frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.
• May require working irregular or extended hours.

Work Environment

• Classroom environment with occasional outdoor settings and field studies.
• Constant attention required when working with students.
• Occasional travel; limited overnight travel may be required.
• Noise levels vary from quiet to loud depending on the activity.
