About the role

Technical Engineers in the Army National Guard are responsible for developing the skills necessary to assist in the planning and execution of construction projects. This includes tasks such as construction site development, including technical investigations, surveys, drafting, and the creation of construction plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct geodetic and construction surveys and interpret survey results using Automated Integrated Survey Instruments and Global Positioning Survey Technology.
  • Provide technical support for vertical and horizontal construction projects.
  • Draw topographic maps and charts using Computer Aided Drafting systems and software.
  • Build scale models of land areas showing hills, lakes, roads, and buildings.
  • Piece together aerial photographs to form large photomaps.
  • Prepare structure wiring and plumbing diagrams.

Requirements

  • Must be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
  • Must be between the ages of 17 and 35.
  • Must be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards.
  • Military enlistment in the Army National Guard.
  • Must meet citizenship requirements (see NATIONALGUARD.com for details).

Skills

  • Able to convert ideas into drawings.
  • Interest in maps and charts.
  • Interest in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to work with Computer Aided Drafting technology.

Schedule

Training for a Technical Engineer in the Army National Guard consists of 10 weeks of Basic Training and 17 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, which includes both classroom and field components.

Pay

The pay for a Technical Engineer in the Army National Guard is based on the number of drill weekends attended and can range from $200 to $250 per weekend, subject to change.
