12R Interior Electrician
About the role
Interior Electricians are essential to the operations of the Army National Guard. They install and repair wire systems in offices, repair shops, airplane hangars, and other buildings. Responsibilities include installing and wiring electrical hardware such as transformers, junction boxes, service panels, electrical boxes, switches, and circuit breakers, as well as ensuring the safety of electrical work and systems using test meters.
Responsibilities
- Install and wire electrical hardware (transformers, junction boxes, service panels, electrical boxes, switches, circuit breakers)
- Read blueprints and wiring plans
- Inspect power distribution systems, identify shorts in wires, and troubleshoot faulty equipment
- Use test meters to ensure electrical safety
- Train and supervise other Soldiers (for Advanced Interior Electricians)
- Coordinate, supervise, and plan electrical layouts (for Advanced Interior Electricians)

Training prepares you for careers in commercial and residential contracting, public utility companies, commercial contracting, or as a self-employed contractor.
Training
Instead of paying for training, you will earn a paycheck while learning. After 10 weeks of Basic Training (covering fundamental Soldiering skills), you will attend seven weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) to learn the specifics of becoming an Army National Guard Interior Electrician. As your skills advance, so will your responsibilities, including supervising and training other Soldiers.

Most non-prior service candidates will earn between $200 and $250 per drill weekend, subject to change.
Requirements
- Military enlistment in the Army National Guard
- Must be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or GED certificate
- Must be between the ages of 17 and 35
- Must pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards
