12R Interior Electrician

About the Role

As overseers of electricity, Interior Electricians are valuable to the operations of the Army National Guard. They’re the Soldiers who light the way for their crews by installing and repairing wire systems in offices, repair shops, airplane hangars, and other buildings. You will install and wire electrical hardware like transformers, junction boxes, service panels, electrical boxes, switches, and circuit breakers. This role requires knowledge of trade tools and the ability to read blueprints and wiring plans. You will also ensure the safety of electrical work and systems using test meters.

Responsibilities

• Inspect power distribution systems, shorts in wires, and faulty equipment

Qualifications

• Must be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or a GED certificate
• Must be between the ages of 17 and 35
• Must be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards

Skills

• Fundamentals of electricity
• Electrical circuit troubleshooting
• Safety procedures

Helpful skills include an interest in electricity, science, and math, the ability to use hand tools, and a preference for physical work.

Training

After 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you will learn fundamental Soldiering skills, you will attend seven weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) to learn the skills needed to start as an Army National Guard Interior Electrician. As your skills increase, so will your responsibilities, including more challenging projects, training and supervising other Soldiers, and coordinating, supervising, and planning electrical layouts.

Most non-prior service candidates will earn between $200 and $250 per drill weekend, subject to change.
