12N Horizontal Construction Engineers
About the Role
As a Horizontal Construction Engineer in the Army National Guard, you’ll operate heavy equipment to prepare sites for construction. Your work ensures roads, airfields, and buildings can be built by removing obstacles and leveling terrain.
Responsibilities
- Analyze information on grade stakes and place them
- Cut and spread fill material with a scraper
- Level earth for runways and roadbeds
- Clear, excavate, and dig areas of construction sites
- Spread fill material
- Transport heavy construction equipment with a tractor-trailer
- Move heavy building materials with cranes
- Assist in performance of combat engineer missions

These skills can translate to a civilian career in construction methods and engineering principles, particularly in operating heavy equipment. Specialized certifications may also be earned for civilian career opportunities.
Training
Job training consists of nine weeks of Basic Training (learning basic Soldiering skills) and nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training, split between classroom instruction and fieldwork. You’ll earn a regular paycheck and qualify for tuition assistance during training.

Most non-prior service candidates will earn between $200 and $250 per drill weekend, subject to change.
Requirements
- Military enlistment in the Army National Guard
- Must be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or GED certificate
- Must be between the ages of 17 and 35
- Must pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards
