About the role

As a Horizontal Construction Engineer in the Army National Guard, you’ll operate heavy equipment to prepare sites for roads, airfields, and buildings. Your work will include clearing obstacles, leveling earth, excavating, and transporting materials to support construction and combat engineer missions.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and place grade stakes
  • Cut and spread fill material with a scraper
  • Level earth for runways and roadbeds
  • Clear, excavate, and dig areas of construction sites
  • Spread fill material
  • Transport heavy construction equipment using a tractor-trailer
  • Move heavy building materials with cranes
  • Assist in performance of combat engineer missions

Skills You’ll Learn

  • Maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Identification of soil types and placement of grade stakes
  • Basic construction methods and engineering principles
  • Operation of heavy construction equipment

Qualifications

  • Must be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or GED certificate
  • Must be between the ages of 17 and 35
  • Must be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards

  • Military enlistment in the Army National Guard required

Training

Job training consists of nine weeks of Basic Training (learning Soldiering skills) and nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training, split between classroom instruction and fieldwork. You’ll earn a regular paycheck and qualify for tuition assistance during training.

Pay

Most non-prior service candidates will earn between $200 and $250 per drill weekend, subject to change.
