About the Role

Assist skilled substation craft workers installing or repairing cables or wires used in electrical power or distribution systems. Perform tasks involving physical labor at construction sites. Responsibilities

• Learn to use appropriate hand (e.g., hammer, screwdriver, sledge hammer) and power tools (e.g., grinders, hand compactors) to perform functions including digging, spreading, and leveling dirt and gravel; lifting, carrying, holding, and moving building materials, tools, and supplies; pulling up cable by hand from large reels mounted on trucks; placing insulating or fireproofing materials over conductors and joints.
• Perform routine, non-machine tasks such as removing forms from set concrete, filling expansion joints with asphalt, placing culvert sections in trench, assembling sections of dredge pipeline, and driving stakes.
• Perform cleaning, compacting, grading, painting, sanding, or stripping operations; may spend time on one job or be transferred between tasks as the project progresses.
• Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
• Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, including:
  • Engaging with your work team to achieve zero injuries.
  • Understanding that no job is so important that safety is compromised; use stop-work authority if needed.
  • Reporting all accidents and near misses; participating in investigations.
  • Identifying and mitigating safety hazards.
  • Following established safety rules and maintaining a safe work environment.
• Perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and fractions.
• Communicate effectively, listen to co-workers’ suggestions and concerns, and provide feedback.
• Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
• Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
• Produce quality work meeting plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Learn to read and understand plans and specifications, including one-line diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, ladder diagrams, P&IDs, and loop diagrams; visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
• Assist journeyman in planning, layout, diagram, installation, and repair of wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment; learn to perform layout independently.
• Observe functioning of installed equipment to identify hazards or needed adjustments; notify supervision of hazards and use stop-work authority as needed.
• Inspect field conditions, identify problems or inaccuracies, and take corrective actions; report issues to supervision.
• If certified to operate equipment, ensure it is correctly operated, maintained, and in good working order; complete Daily Equipment Inspections.
• Perform all other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.

Requirements

• 0–2 years of experience working as a laborer or in any construction craft as a helper, with a basic knowledge of the substation field of work.
• Ability to understand and follow directions.
• Must possess all necessary tools (see Laborer tool list).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, which may include a criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

Qualifications

• NCCER Construction Craft Laborer certification.
• NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined or cluttered spaces and uneven areas.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls; requires repetitive movement.
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions.
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
• Work in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures; exposure to inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain).
• Work in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions; exposure to distracting or uncomfortable noise levels.
• Work around hazardous equipment; this position is considered safety-sensitive.
