About the Role

Assist skilled substation craft workers installing or repairing cables or wires used in electrical power or distribution systems. Perform tasks involving physical labor at construction sites, including cleaning and preparing sites, digging trenches, setting braces, and cleaning up rubble, debris, and other waste materials.

Responsibilities

• Learn to use appropriate hand (e.g., hammer, screwdriver, sledge hammer) and power tools (e.g., grinders, hand compactors) to perform functions such as digging, spreading, and leveling dirt and gravel; lifting, carrying, and moving materials, tools, and supplies.
• Pull up cable by hand from large reels mounted on trucks; place insulating or fireproofing materials over conductors and joints.
• Clean tools, equipment, materials, and work areas.
• Mix, pour, and spread concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials.
• Perform routine, non-machine tasks such as removing forms from set concrete, filling expansion joints with asphalt, placing culvert sections in trenches, assembling sections of dredge pipeline, and driving stakes.
• Perform cleaning, compacting, grading, painting, sanding, or stripping operations.
• Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
• Participate in all safety-related processes and programs, including using stop-work authority for safety concerns.
• Report all accidents, near misses, and safety hazards to supervision; participate in investigations as needed.
• Engage in pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify and mitigate safety hazards.
• Follow established safety rules, maintain a safe work environment, and respond to safety hazards or warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, warning tags, sirens).
• Perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers and fractions.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers, providing feedback and addressing safety concerns.
• Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
• Participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
• Produce quality work meeting plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Learn to read and understand plans and specifications, including one-line diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, ladder diagrams, P&IDs, and loop diagrams.
• Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
• Assist journeyman in planning, layout, installation, and repair of wiring, electrical fixtures, and control equipment; learn to perform layout independently.
• Observe functioning of installed equipment to identify hazards or needed adjustments.
• Inspect field conditions, identify problems or inaccuracies, and take corrective actions; report issues to supervision.
• If certified, operate construction equipment correctly and ensure it is maintained and in good working order; complete daily equipment inspections.
• Perform all other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.

Requirements

• 0–2 years of experience working as a laborer or in any construction craft as a helper, with basic knowledge of the substation field.
• Ability to understand and follow directions.
• Must possess all necessary tools (see Laborer tool list).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

Qualifications

• NCCER Construction Craft Laborer or NCCER Core Curriculum (or equivalent Craft Training Program).

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Physical Demands:
  • Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined or cluttered spaces and uneven areas.
  • Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Repetitive movement.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel frameworks, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Work up to a 12-hour shift performing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions.
• Work Environment:
  • Typical construction site environment with cramped workspaces and awkward positions.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures (above 90°F or below 32°F) and inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain).
  • Exposure to bright or inadequate lighting, loud or uncomfortable noise levels, and hazardous equipment.
  • This position is considered safety-sensitive.
