1 Year Contract Position: Long Term Substitute Teacher - Elementary School (26-27)

About the Role

Teach with purpose in a role that plays a key role in bringing to life the academic and cultural visions of our schools. This includes daily lesson planning, intentional curriculum design, and regular data analysis to support all students' learning and growth. Teachers implement Social Emotional Learning lessons and Restorative Practices to foster a joyful, inclusive classroom community.

Collaborate closely with the school’s Leadership Team, including an Instructional Coach, through weekly meetings and ongoing feedback to refine instructional practices. Commit to anti-racism by engaging in ongoing development to reflect on personal identities and experiences, and by analyzing school systems, academics, culture, and data to progress toward an anti-racist organization.

Responsibilities

• Manage the daily math tutoring block: launch routines to ensure every student connects with a tutor within three minutes, and oversee the room to maintain an environment conducive to multiple live sessions.
• Circulate constantly to address tech issues and behavior, ensuring tutors can teach effectively and covering students whose sessions do not occur.
• Ensure student safety by adhering to KIPP's student safety and technology policies, including mandated reporter obligations, during every virtual session.
• Track and troubleshoot daily attendance, session participation, logins, audio, and connection issues, escalating patterns that cannot be resolved immediately.
• Review session reports weekly and communicate insights to classroom teachers, highlighting discrepancies such as students who attend but do not engage.
• Maintain the tutoring environment by managing devices, headsets, chargers, session links, and rosters, and flagging equipment issues proactively.
• Serve as the school-side contact for the tutoring provider, handling scheduling, rosters, and day-to-day operations.
• Plan daily lessons and long-term curriculum aligned with KIPP’s academic vision and goals.
• Analyze data regularly to identify student academic trends and inform instructional practices.
• Create and maintain a positive, warm, inclusive, rigorous, and engaging classroom environment using Restorative Practices and Social Emotional Learning.
• Implement culturally responsive classroom management strategies to ensure a safe learning environment for all students.
• Communicate regularly with staff, students, families, and stakeholders to build strong partnerships.
• Attend and engage in weekly Professional Development and other Communities of Practice to continue growing as an educator.
• Update student records regularly, including attendance, grades, and behavior data.

Requirements

• Hold a B.A/B.S degree from a regionally accredited institution.
• Obtain an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit.
• Commitment to KIPP’s mission and vision, and to being an anti-racist educator.
• Belief that all students can achieve at the highest academic levels.
• Strong content area knowledge and skills in building relationships with students, families, and communities.
• Proficient communication with students, families, and colleagues.
• Proficiency in Google Suite applications (Google Classroom, Hangout, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.).
• Ability to learn and utilize instructional technology to support in-class and distance learning (e.g., Zoom, Nearpod).

Preferred: Experience as an educator teaching students with similar demographics to KIPP Public Schools Northern California’s student community.

Working Conditions

• Physical: Ability to navigate school and classroom settings, access and utilize technology, and occasionally lift/carry equipment (1-20 lbs). Physical agility to move in various positions, including kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead.
• Mental: Ability to handle deadlines, analyze problems, work with interruptions, concentrate for extended periods, read, calculate, perform routine math, and memorize/recall objects and people.
• Environmental: Work in a school and classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies.

Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position on a school year calendar cycle, located at KIPP school sites. The role has an end date of June 30, 2027.

Pay

Bay Area Campus Substitute Salary: $65,050.00.
