Provides direct nursing services to students and staff to maximize health and wellness in the school community, performing duties in accordance with District/State Board of Education policies, procedures, and state law regarding nurse practice.
Responsibilities
- Administers first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatments (e.g., oral suctioning, catheterization) with appropriate assessment and documentation.
- Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug), and other health-related issues to identify problems, develop Individual Health Care Plans and/or Emergency Action Plans, refer for proper treatment, and comply with legal requirements.
- Assists with mandated vision and hearing screening procedures for the purpose of referring medical conditions.
- Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies to promote and secure student health services, provide information, and comply with legal requirements.
- Compiles statistical data to document activities, provide written reference, and convey information.
- Completes accident/incident reports for students and staff to comply with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
- Maintains contact with professional nursing organizations and utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
- Maintains the daily environment of the health office facility and supplies to ensure efficient and effective operation of the Health Services Department.
- Maintains communication with the Health Services Coordinator, Principal, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to meet the health and safety needs of students.
- Advises parents/guardians of changes in student health and recommends further medical or emotional intervention.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues, including student files, records, individual health care plans, agency referrals, and accident reports.
- Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars to gather, convey, or share information on student health needs, service delivery, and educational programs, and to improve skills and knowledge.
- Maintains accurate medical records (e.g., immunizations, physical examinations, medical conditions) to ensure compliance with state mandates.
- Actively participates in the school community to represent and promote health and wellness.
- Performs other health or school-related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the Health Services Department.
- Provides health services, information, and counseling to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
- Provides direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness/emergency care to students and staff using nursing assessment skills and knowledge, in accordance with professional standards, District policies, and state/local mandates.
- Utilizes existing technology effectively to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the Health Services Department.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a job-related area.
- Illinois Registered Professional Nurse License.
- First Aid and CPR/AED Certificate.
- Physically able to access all parts of the school building and grounds.
- Finger dexterity, grasping ability, and tactile sensitivity for tasks such as picking, pinching, typing, and assessing medical conditions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, including speaking, reading, and writing with proper grammar and punctuation.
- Ability to deal with people under stress and in emergency situations.
- Ability to talk and hear, including assessing individuals for illness or injury, even when not in direct line of sight.
- Visual acuity for reading, operating a computer, and assessing individuals for illness or injury.
Preferred: Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility, and previous pediatric or school nurse experience.

Pay
Minimum starting salary: $56,027 (includes IMRF pension), pro-rated to start date.
