Missoula Parks & Recreation is seeking passionate and skilled mountain biking coaches to lead youth and adult riders in safe, fun, and engaging biking experiences.
About the role
As a Recreation Program Instructor, you'll plan and lead lessons, teach proper techniques, and promote a positive and encouraging learning environment. This role requires strong communication skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to adapt instruction for participants of all skill levels.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, evaluate, and lead classes/lessons within specified program.
- Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations on sports, recreational activities, and the use of exercise equipment; instruct participants with varied fitness and skill levels; perform emergency first aid.
- Inspect and set up sports and fitness equipment; observe all participants to ensure safety.
- Demonstrate and/or explain how to perform various exercises, routines, and techniques to minimize injuries and improve fitness and performance.
- Monitor participants’ techniques and progress to ensure proper form and adapt program as needed. Provide options during class/lesson to help participants feel successful.
- Maintain and organize various paperwork, schedules, and other required resources.
- Promote positive sportsmanship and stewardship towards all recreation facilities (indoor and outdoor) for participants and spectators.
- Perform other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.
Requirements
- Any combination of training and experience with leading sports or fitness programs.
- Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the position.
- Must be able to pass a fingerprint background check (if 18 years old or older).
- Must have CPR/First Aid & AED certifications.
- Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification, preferred.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. or less.
- Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable seasonal weather conditions.
Qualifications
- Recreation Program Instructor I: Little to no prior experience facilitating.
- Recreation Program Instructor II: Must have two (2) years of facilitating experience.
- Recreation Program Instructor III: Must have four (4) years of facilitating experience.
Skills
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques used in recreational sports and fitness activities.
- Knowledge of rules and strategies of specified program with the ability to interpret and apply City adapted rules and regulations.
- Skill in promoting positive and safe environments.
- Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
- Ability to effectively break instructions down to specific skills and techniques with patience and tact.
- Ability to lead and work with both adults and youth of all ages.
- Ability to effectively meet and communicate with the public and deescalate stressful situations.
- Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.
- Ability to accept criticism and resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.
- Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures.
Pay
- Program Instructor I: $25.00 per hour
- Program Instructor II: $27.00 per hour
- Program Instructor III: $30.00 per hour
