Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or higher
  • Four (4) years of specialized zoo animal care experience in the area of assignment
  • One (1) year of supervisory or lead worker experience
  • Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state

Responsibilities

  • Direct and provide care for assigned animal collection, including:
    • Observing animal behavior, watching for illness and injury, and monitoring reproductive behavior
    • Cleaning, feeding, and monitoring animals
    • Cleaning exhibits and holding areas
    • Assisting with animal handling, capturing, and restraint
    • Assisting veterinary staff in animal procedures
    • Preparing documentation on animal care
  • Perform enrichment and conditioning activities for the animals, including:
    • Developing enrichment devices
    • Preparing enrichment schedules
    • Evaluating success of enrichment items
    • Training and conditioning animals for medical procedures and health checks
  • Assist in the maintenance of animal exhibits, including:
    • Cleaning animal exhibits, aquariums, and holding areas
    • Assisting in the replacement and repair of structures, plants, and other habitat elements
    • Preparing work orders and coordinating with maintenance staff
    • Assisting with planning and design of animal habitats and displays
  • Perform various duties in support of animal care, including:
    • Requisitioning animal food and supplies
    • Maintaining inventories
    • Preparing detailed records of animal behaviors, physical condition, and reproduction
    • Recommending improvements in animal care
    • Providing information about the zoo and facilities to the public
    • Assisting with budget preparation for the area
    • Attending meetings
    • Entering information into computers and preparing reports
  • Supervise assigned staff, including:
    • Scheduling, assigning, instructing, guiding, and checking work
    • Appraising employee performance
    • Providing training and development
    • Enforcing personnel rules, regulations, and work behavior standards
    • Counseling, motivating, and maintaining harmony
    • Interviewing applicants
    • Recommending hiring, termination, discipline, merit pay, or other employee status changes
  • Enforce animal and staff safety requirements
