About the Role
The Housekeeper is responsible for performing the day-to-day activities of the Housekeeping Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations to ensure our facility is maintained in a clean, safe, and comfortable manner.
Responsibilities
- Ensure work/cleaning schedules are followed as closely as practical.
- Report all accidents/incidents to your supervisor immediately.
- Coordinate daily housekeeping services with nursing services when performing routine cleaning in resident living and recreational areas.
- Perform day-to-day housekeeping functions as assigned, including:
- Emptying and sanitizing ash trays daily (into appropriate metal containers with self-closing covers).
- Cleaning and polishing furnishings, fixtures, ledges, and room heating/cooling units in resident rooms and recreational areas.
- Cleaning, washing, sanitizing, and polishing bathroom fixtures, ensuring water marks are removed.
- Cleaning windows and mirrors in resident rooms, recreational areas, bathrooms, and entrance/exit ways.
- Cleaning floors through sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, stripping, waxing, buffing, and disinfecting (with proper caution/safety signs).
- Cleaning carpets through vacuuming, shampooing, deodorizing, and disinfecting.
- Cleaning walls and ceilings by washing, wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, disinfecting, and deodorizing.
- Removing dirt, dust, grease, and film from surfaces using proper cleaning/disinfecting solutions.
- Cleaning hallways, stairways, and elevators.
- Discarding waste/trash into proper containers and relining trash receptacles with plastic liners.
- Cleaning vacant rooms as assigned.
- Ensuring work areas are clean and equipment/tools/supplies are properly stored.
- Performing isolation cleaning procedures in accordance with infection control protocols.
- Discarding infectious wastes into appropriate containers.
- Turn in all found articles to your supervisor.
- Maintain an adequate supply of housekeeping supplies in utility/janitorial closets and report supply needs to your supervisor.
- Report burned-out light bulbs, exit lights, and other maintenance needs to your supervisor.
- Assist others in lifting heavy equipment or supplies as needed.
- Clean work/supply carts and equipment as necessary and ensure proper storage at the end of the shift.
- Attend departmental and staff meetings as directed.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident information and respect resident rights, including knocking before entering rooms and informing residents before moving personal possessions.
- Follow established safety, sanitation, and infection control policies, including:
- Wearing/using safety equipment (e.g., back brace) when lifting or moving heavy objects.
- Keeping work areas free of hazardous objects.
- Following proper techniques for mixing chemicals and using labels/MSDSs.
- Reporting hazardous conditions or equipment to your supervisor.
- Using personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling infectious materials or hazardous chemicals.
- Disposing of refuse and infectious wastes according to established procedures.
- Coordinating isolation procedures with nursing services.
- Participate in in-service training programs, including OSHA and CDC training for hazard communication, TB management, and bloodborne pathogens.
Working Conditions
- Works in all areas of the facility with intermittent movement during working hours.
- Subject to frequent interruptions and may need to reschedule cleaning activities.
- Interacts with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies, and others under various conditions.
- May encounter hostile or emotionally upset residents, family members, or visitors.
- Works beyond normal hours, weekends, and holidays as necessary, including call-backs during emergencies (e.g., severe weather, evacuation).
- May be required to work shifts other than the one hired for.
- Subject to potential injury from falls, burns, odors, dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.
- Exposed to infectious waste, diseases (including TB, AIDS, and Hepatitis B), and hazardous chemicals.
