About the Role

YouTube is implementing a sweeping update to its Partner Program (YPP) starting February 1, 2027, significantly changing the monetization requirements for creators. These updates aim to "meaningfully reward active creators" and foster a more sustainable, diversified creator ecosystem.

Key Changes

  • Higher Entry Thresholds for New Creators:
    • Long-Form Content: 8,000 qualified public watch hours over the last 365 days (up from 4,000).
    • Shorts Content: 20 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days (up from 10 million).

    The 1,000-subscriber requirement remains unchanged.

  • Who is Affected?

These new thresholds apply exclusively to new applicants starting February 1, 2027. Existing partners will retain their monetization status but must review and accept updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027, to avoid disruptions to fan funding and other features.

  • Shorts Monetization Continuity Requirement:

Beginning February 2027, existing creators must maintain 10 million qualified Shorts views over a rolling 90-day period to remain eligible for ads and subscription revenue sharing within the Shorts feed.

    Soft Landing System:

    • No exit from YPP if views drop below the threshold.
    • Long-form ad revenue remains unaffected.
    • Shorts revenue sharing pauses automatically and resumes once the 10-million-view mark is crossed again.

  • Premium Lite Expansion:

YouTube is expanding Premium Lite globally, allocating 60% of net Premium Lite revenue to a dedicated creator pool (vs. 30% for standard Premium). Creators receive:

    • 55% of revenue for long-form watch time.
    • 45% of revenue for Shorts views.
  • New Incentive Programs:

For creators who fall below the new Shorts view thresholds, YouTube will introduce milestone-based earnings, including:

    • Bonuses for YouTube Shopping integration.
    • Incentives for brand deals facilitated through the platform.
    • Earnings boosts for creators who start or grow viral trends.
  • Redefined "Active" Status:

From February 1, 2027, a channel must meet one of the following criteria every 90 days to retain monetization:

    • 1,000 qualified watch hours in the past 365 days.
    • 1 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
    • Two long-form uploads or five Shorts uploads within a 90-day period.

Rationale Behind the Changes

YouTube aims to:

  • Filter out low-effort, mass-produced content.
  • Drive growth in Premium subscriptions for a more stable revenue model.
  • Focus on engagement and sustained viewership to safeguard the Partner Program’s value.

Action Plan for Creators

  • Review YouTube Analytics to assess progress toward the new thresholds (8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views).
  • Diversify revenue streams beyond AdSense (e.g., YouTube Shopping, affiliate links, community funding).
  • Monitor YouTube Studio for updated terms and accept them by January 31, 2027.
