About the Role

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Program Instructor is responsible for providing age-appropriate sports programs and branch activities, implementing program plans, and supervising activities in the gym and at program sites. The role incorporates YMCA Character Development values into each lesson and reinforces the Y culture while maintaining a clean, safe, and hazard-free environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan all activities in advance, ensuring preparedness with proper materials, equipment, and attire.
  • Incorporate YMCA Character Development values into each lesson.
  • Maintain class/participant attendance and student skill accomplishment records.
  • Keep gym and program areas clean, recognize potential hazards, and eliminate risks.
  • Plan and implement culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate program activities consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adhere to program standards, including safety and cleanliness.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Ensure all classes align with YMCA of Cleveland standards and guidelines.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical/disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Maintain positive relations with patrons and staff, modeling relationship-building skills.
  • Follow the child abuse and neglect reporting process, including completing required forms, contacting child protective services, and notifying supervisors.
  • Act as a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; Associate Degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of one year’s experience in programming/program growth, preferably in youth-oriented programming and sports.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Adherence to Bloodborne Pathogen standards and annual training.

  • Regular use of a computer for extended periods and communication via computer/phone/smart device.
  • Frequent sitting, reaching, and moving around the work environment.
  • Occasional lifting and/or moving of up to 10 pounds.
  • Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Moderate noise level in the work environment.
