Youth Coach/Trainer (Ridgewood YMCA)

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives, goals, and logistics.
  • Schedule team practices and games during Saturday Night Lights (SNL) Teen Center hours in collaboration with Teen Advisors.
  • Create written plans for all practices that are age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.
  • Provide supervision of the players to ensure safety and engagement.
  • Be able to modify and adapt coaching styles to meet the needs of the participants.
  • Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship over winning and the outcome of the game.
  • Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding schedules.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them and/or their child/teen.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the progress of their child/teen and registration.
  • Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition. This includes conducting scheduled equipment safety checks.

  • Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
  • When applicable, provide direction to volunteers or Teen Advisors who are supporting the program.
  • Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) of any incident reports that need to be filled out.
  • Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions, and special events.
  • Adhere to all Saturday Night Lights (SNL) funding expectations and requirements.
  • Keep a safe and clean activity space.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience coaching children/teens sports in a structured setting.
  • Experience working with teens in a group setting.
  • A coaching license in the respective sport is preferred.
  • Content expert in the designated sport(s).
  • In-depth knowledge of sporting strategies.
  • Current First Aid or CPR Certifications.
  • Must attend the YMCA Coaching 101 Training within ninety (90) days of hire.
  • Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports Certificate within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Must receive the OCFS Mandated Reporter Online and the Child Abuse Prevention Certificates within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Must complete the YMCA Preventing Sexual Harassment, Discrimination, and Retaliation, Cybersecurity Awareness, and Active Assailant online training courses within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Must complete the YMCA Risk Management and Ethics & Boundaries training courses within sixty (60) days of hire.
  • Passion for youth development and knowledge of youth development stages.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
  • Must be available to work Saturday evenings.
