About the role
This is the entry level position within the Detention Officer series. Incumbents initially perform routine duties assigned to positions in this series and work under the supervision of the Detention Supervisor. Incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned with increasing independence. Supervision is received from the Detention Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Maintains the safety of detainees at all times, conducts regular checks of facilities, maintains calm and order in facility and conducts cell searches and strip searches as necessary.
- Processes youth entering the Juvenile Justice Center, complete appropriate forms and related paperwork and issues clothing and personal hygiene supplies to detainees as appropriate. Releases property as appropriate.
- Transports detainees to court, other agencies, medical appointments and other appearances as necessary.
- Contacts parents of detained youth and explains center policies and procedures.
- Serves meals and snacks to detainees.
- Restrain youth as necessary, perform first aid and life-saving measures if necessary.
- Supervises youth during visiting hours and approves visitors.
- Performs or directs youth in housekeeping duties including washing walls, cleaning toilets and sinks, sweeping and mopping, washing and folding laundry.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with previous corrections, juvenile or related experience preferred
- A high school diploma with previous corrections, juvenile or related experience required
- Possession of a valid Mississippi driver’s license.

- This is a Non-Exempt position.
