Founded in 2006, CAL Sports Academy provides youth sports instruction, training, leagues, camps, clinics, private training, and athlete development opportunities designed to help young people improve both on and off the court. Our goal is to create positive, organized, and development-focused environments where athletes can improve their basketball skills while building confidence, character, discipline, leadership, teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship.

About the role

CAL Sports Academy is seeking responsible, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic candidates for our Youth Basketball Instructor/Coach position. This part-time role is designed for individuals with meaningful basketball playing, coaching, training, or instructional experience who enjoy working with young athletes and helping them improve their skills, confidence, basketball IQ, teamwork, discipline, and understanding of the game.

Youth Basketball Coaches may work with athletes through instructional classes, clinics, camps, leagues, private training, small group training, and other basketball development opportunities based on experience, qualifications, availability, and organizational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead organized, engaging, and age-appropriate basketball instruction for youth athletes.
  • Teach basketball fundamentals including ball handling, passing, shooting, finishing, footwork, defense, rebounding, movement, spacing, and decision making.
  • Help athletes develop basketball IQ and a stronger understanding of individual and team concepts.
  • Prepare lesson plans, drills, and training progressions in advance of assigned programs.
  • Adapt instruction for beginner, intermediate, and more experienced athletes.
  • Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, correction, encouragement, and constructive feedback.
  • Keep athletes active, engaged, and appropriately challenged throughout each session.
  • Help athletes build confidence, discipline, teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, and a positive approach to competition.
  • Evaluate athlete strengths, developmental needs, and areas for continued improvement.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, organized, and encouraging learning environment.
  • Set up and break down basketball equipment before and after programs.
  • Communicate professionally with athletes, parents, fellow coaches, and CAL Sports Academy staff.
  • Provide appropriate feedback regarding athlete progress when requested.
  • Assist with camps, clinics, leagues, training programs, private training, and special events as opportunities become available.
  • Arrive prepared and on time for all assigned programs.
  • Represent CAL Sports Academy with professionalism, enthusiasm, integrity, and respect.

Requirements

  • Previous basketball playing, coaching, training, or instructional experience.
  • Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and terminology.
  • Ability to clearly demonstrate and teach basketball skills.
  • Experience working with children or teenagers.
  • Positive, energetic, patient, and encouraging coaching style.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable, punctual, organized, and professional.
  • Ability to work effectively with athletes of different ages and skill levels.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other CAL Sports Academy coaches and staff.
  • Willingness to receive feedback, continue learning, and grow professionally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous youth basketball coaching or instructional experience.
  • Competitive high school, AAU, collegiate, professional, or other advanced basketball playing experience.
  • Experience independently planning and leading practices, classes, clinics, or training sessions.
  • Experience providing private or small group basketball training.
  • Experience working with athletes across multiple ages and skill levels.
  • Experience communicating with parents and families in a youth sports environment.
  • Background in Physical Education, Education, Exercise Science, Recreation, Coaching, or Sports Management.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.

Schedule

This is a part-time position with hours based on program needs, athlete enrollment, qualifications, and coach availability.

  • Primary coaching opportunities are generally Monday through Friday: approximately 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Saturdays: approximately 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
  • Additional camp, clinic, league, private training, and special event opportunities throughout the year.

Coaches are not required to be available every day. However, consistent weekly availability is important for maintaining dependable programming and strong relationships with athletes and families.

Benefits

Compensation is based on basketball background, coaching experience, teaching ability, qualifications, responsibilities, and overall fit. Additional earning opportunities may become available through private training, small group training, camps, clinics, leagues, and expanded coaching responsibilities.

Depending on experience and position, coaches may have opportunities to work alongside experienced staff, receive feedback and mentorship, strengthen teaching and communication skills, and take on additional responsibilities as they grow. Some candidates may begin in an assistant or developmental role before independently leading programs.

Clearances

All coaches working with youth athletes must obtain and maintain the required Pennsylvania background clearances, including:

  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
  • Pennsylvania Criminal History Record Check
  • FBI Fingerprint Background Check, when applicable

Candidates who do not currently possess the required clearances must be willing and able to obtain them before beginning employment.
