Youth Attendant, Part-Time
About the role
The Youth Attendant is key in delivering a safe, engaging, and upscale experience for children and families at The Houstonian Club. This individual is responsible for supervising children during club activities, assisting with program setup and execution, and ensuring the highest standards of care, safety, and service are met at all times. The ideal candidate is energetic, attentive, and passionate about working with children in a premium hospitality environment. The Youth Attendant provides safe, fun care to the children of Houstonian Club Members when they are in the care of the Youth Department. This role is critical to maintaining the luxury standard and reputation of The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa while upholding the highest levels of discretion and professionalism.
Responsibilities
- Direct positive, appropriate interactions with children while in care
- Adhere to any restrictions or guidelines set by parents for each child under supervision
- Supervise and monitor the safety of children
- Follow departmental guidelines and parent directions for mealtimes and snacks for children
- Help children maintain good hygiene (e.g., handwashing before eating and after using the restroom)
- Change the diapers of infants and toddlers
- Use Youth Department resources to offer a variety of activities for children that provide a range of physical activity, playtime, and rest
- Monitor children for signs of hunger, fatigue, need for diaper change, and other situations that may require adult intervention
- Keep records of children’s interests, favorite toys and activities, and other information to assist in making the child more comfortable and engaged when in care
- Make note of any achievements, milestones, or notable moments with the child to pass along to parents
- Document any departmental supplies that are running low so the manager can purchase before running out
- Keep all play areas, furniture, games, and toys organized, clean, and sanitized throughout the shift
- Pick up and put away toys, games, and supplies as needed throughout the shift
- Keep floors clean and clear of trash, debris, toys, shoes, and any trip hazards throughout the shift
- Clean and sanitize tables, chairs, shoe rack, climbing structures, etc. daily; deep clean and sanitize climbing structures weekly
- Follow all policies and procedures for the Houstonian Club and Youth Department
- Assist with setup, cleanup, activity, and maintaining the happiness of members and guests during children’s birthday parties and Youth Department sponsored events
- Ensure the safety of children and others in the Club who utilize the Bouldering Wall, making sure that all safety equipment is in good working order and safety practices are precisely followed
- If any incident arises, seek supervisor or manager on duty to determine the circumstances of severity
- Work in a safe manner at all times and perform other duties or tasks assigned by supervisor that are related to the Youth Department and the Houstonian Campus
Knowledge and Skills
- High School Diploma or GED is strongly preferred
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Some previous work experience in childcare is strongly preferred
- Able to learn and teach safety protocols for children and adults making use of the Bouldering Wall
- Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining a positive and calming presence with children
- Available to work a varied schedule that may include AM and PM shifts on weekdays, weekends, and holidays, based upon the needs of the business
- Must be available to work during Youth Department sponsored events, including the Vertical Mile Challenge, Spring Fling, Tree Lighting, and others as needed
- Must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in English; fluency in additional languages is a plus
- Must be able to learn to use the Youth Department computer system to look up member information, post charges, etc.
Licenses and/or Certifications
- Current Adult/Child CPR and First Aid certification before the first day of work (preferred)
Physical Job Requirements
- Physical Stamina: Frequent standing, walking, climbing ladders and stairs, kneeling, reaching overhead, lifting and carrying various objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
- Hearing / Speech: Must be able to effectively engage in one-on-one communication with guests, members, and customers and use a 2-way radio to communicate clearly and accurately with co-workers
- Vision: Must be able to read instructions, reports, and log sheets accurately; must be able to work with computers and PDAs in varying light conditions
- Literacy: Must be able to analyze and process written information from a variety of sources and effectively communicate content of reports
- Chemicals/Agents: Must be able to work safely with chemicals according to SDS sheets and all applicable laws, codes, and regulatory requirements
