About the role
The Yard Operator plays a key role in our operations, contributing to daily tasks with a broad skill set. This position involves scrap grading, equipment operation, and maintenance duties, ensuring smooth and safe workflows.
Responsibilities
- Follow all established Gerdau Safety, Environmental, and Routine procedures specific to the yard.
- Perform tasks ranging from simple to moderately complex, ensuring correct procedures are followed.
- Scan all incoming scrap for radiation; quarantine and report any material that fails the scan.
- Operate loaders and/or material handlers to load and unload scrap while adhering to Gerdau and customer quality standards.
- Inspect incoming scrap for quality and environmental standards, applying appropriate deductions and downgrades; communicate findings promptly.
- Verify scrap grade and quality, identifying deductions and downgrades.
- Ensure all outbound materials meet safety and quality standards.
- Perform and document daily Routine Equipment Care (REC).
- Detect and report faulty materials, environmental hazards, safety issues, or improper equipment operation to supervision.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area and equipment.
- Provide excellent customer service and promote Gerdau’s core values.
- Participate in daily safety routines.
- For locations with rail: shift full and empty cars, operate locomotives, activate switches, couple and uncouple cars, and set brakes or wheel blocks as requested.
- Assist in monthly inventory counts (where applicable).
- Support maintenance personnel in equipment repairs as required.
- Operate the Baler and assist in nonferrous processing, including segregation of materials like copper, brass, and aluminum.
- Collaborate with co-workers on daily operational duties to enhance safety, efficiency, and profitability.
- Stage and remove material for torching using a material handler (where applicable).
- Contribute to problem-solving efforts as needed.
