Responsibilities
- Moves material around the yard as needed.
- Collects fully loaded containers and returns empty containers to designated locations.
- Drives a semi-truck within the yard to transport materials.
- Communicates professionally with customers and their employees.
- Fulfills tasks as directed by multiple supervisors and colleagues.
- Conducts daily inspections of trailers and equipment.
- Ensures trailers are organized for efficient use of space.
- Communicates with supervisors and material handlers to determine commodities to load.
- Works independently when driving scrap metal.
- Assists customers to address their needs and resolve issues.
- Collaborates with other employees to maintain a safe working environment.
- Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and work areas.
- Ensures proper disposal of waste materials.
- Completes inspections to confirm cleanup is completed.
- Ensures effective housekeeping in the workplace area.
Qualifications
- Must pass a medical physical and drug test.
- Must pass a background check.
- Preferred qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, bi-lingual (English & Spanish), and ability to communicate effectively and perform basic math skills.
Job Duties
- Pre and post-inspection of equipment.
- Maintain records of inspections.
- Basic maintenance of crucial equipment aspects.
- Communicate with mechanics for regular preventative maintenance.
- Daily inspection of trailers in the bull pen.
- Provide a comprehensive list of transportation equipment on the yard.
- Work interdepartmentally with supervisors and peers.
- Ensure the safe movement of equipment through the yard.
- Able to take direction from multiple people in a positive manner.
- Load and unload trucks hauling scrap metal.
- Inspect and determine metal grade for inventory tracking.
- Perform daily operation and safety inspections.
- Communicate with supervisor and material handler to determine commodities to load.
- Drive scrap metal independently when necessary.
- Communicate with customers to satisfy their needs and assist them when problems arise.
- Collaborate with other employees in the scrap metal yard to ensure a safe working environment.
- Perform normal daily operation maintenance, including refueling, lubrication, cooling system cleaning, and housekeeping.
- Clean up work area at the end of each shift.
- Keep work areas neat and orderly.
- Organize materials to have more effective use of space.
- Dispose of various waste materials in the appropriate manner.
- Complete inspections to ensure cleanup is completed.
- Ensure effective housekeeping in the workplace area for safety and better hygiene conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Work Environment: Scrap metal recycling and shredder yard.
- Equipment & Tools: Trucks up to 18 wheeler, hydraulic truck tilt and lift operations, box containers, mechanics tools.
- Physical Demand Level: Light to moderate.
- Sensory Demands: Hearing, vision, touch, smell, and taste.
- Hand Movements: Repetitive motions, gripping.
