Writing and Learning Support Specialist
About the role
The Writing and Learning Support Specialist supports the daily operations of the Academic Success Center by providing writing and learning support services, assisting with tutor coordination, and promoting student academic success. Reporting to the Tutoring Coordinator, this position provides direct academic assistance to students, supports the training and scheduling of tutors, assists with Academic Success Center programming and assessment, and collaborates with faculty and campus partners to enhance student learning.
Responsibilities
- Provide individual and small-group tutoring in writing and other academic skill areas while coaching students in effective learning strategies.
- Assist the Tutoring Coordinator with recruiting, training, scheduling, and supporting tutors.
- Monitor tutoring services and assist with the daily operations of the Academic Success Center.
- Support tutoring initiatives, workshops, student success programming, and assessment activities.
- Maintain tutoring records and data, including confidential student information.
- Collaborate with faculty and campus partners to promote academic support services and student success.
- Promote Academic Success Center services through outreach and marketing activities.
- Participate on campus, college, and professional committees as assigned.
- Promotion/marketing and monitoring the accuracy of the ASC Website Blog.
Requirements
- Knowledge of writing pedagogy, tutoring practices, student success strategies, and adult learning principles.
- Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, customer service, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to assess student learning needs and provide effective academic coaching and writing support.
- Ability to train and support tutors while working collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office and instructional technology to support student learning.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple priorities in a student-centered environment.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include experience providing academic support, tutoring, writing assistance, or instructional support in a college, university, or other educational setting. Experience supporting or coordinating tutoring, learning support, student success, or academic support programs is also required. Additionally, experience leading, training, mentoring, or supervising employees, student workers, tutors, or volunteers is necessary. Experience working with students from diverse academic backgrounds and varying learning needs, as well as experience using Microsoft Office Suite and standard office technology, is also required.
Skills
Preferred qualifications include experience working in a college or university Writing Center, Learning Center, or Academic Success Center. Experience supervising or mentoring peer tutors or student employees, developing tutor training, workshops, or academic success programming, and using tutoring management software is also preferred. Experience collaborating with faculty to support student learning is also desirable.
Benefits
The hiring range for this position is $55,000 per year. Telework options are subject to change based on business needs.
Schedule
The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
