About the role

The principal function of an employee in this class is to assist, plan, supervise, review and evaluate the work of collection systems construction team of the City's sewer collections system. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Water Renewal Assistant Superintendent – Collections, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of assigned personnel, including providing approval for the selections of staff, monitoring work schedules, interviewing for new or vacant positions, providing direction when necessary, disciplining and required, and managing conflict.
  • Primary function of this position is to manage a team specializing in the CIPP (cure in place pipe) lining work, manhole repairs, infiltration and any other construction type projects that may develop.
  • Cover traffic control and notifications of outages to residents and businesses.
  • Handle odor and noise complaints from the public based on repair work or projects.
  • Order liners and other materials to perform repairs.
  • Effectively manage projects and successful completions of such projects.
  • Confer with department heads, inspectors, contractors, engineers, utility companies, line locators, and other City personnel to determine appropriate workloads to meet daily operational needs.
  • Oversee the implementation on work programs designed to meet daily, monthly, and annual work objectives as directed by the Wastewater Assistant Superintendent.
  • Provide input to the development of the Division budget, including prioritizing daily, monthly and yearly workloads, and planning for equipment purchases, staffing, and professional development.
  • Review maps and drawings for the Engineering Department, including proposing repairs of sewer lines, manholes, and infiltration.
  • Perform record keeping of daily, monthly and yearly work activities, including maintaining records of all repairs (sewer lines, manholes, infiltration), and other duties such as hydro cleaning, CCTV, and dye testing.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED (General Education Degree) required.
  • At least 3 years of experience in sewer collections systems required.
  • CURE IN PLACE PIPE (CIPP) experience preferred.
  • Manhole and infiltration repair preferred.
  • Construction experience required.
  • Class 1 collections license required.
  • Class 2 collections license required within 12 months of hire into the position.

  • Ability to efficiently read and interpret plans and maps as required.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate related tools, equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to work outdoors over extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

Pay

Hourly range: $27.73 - $35.35

Schedule

Monday through Thursday, 10-hour day shift with flexibility
