Duties and Responsibilities
- Works with patients who have altered skin integrity.
- Directs the day-to-day functions of the nursing assistants in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.
- Evaluates the skin surface of at-risk patients such as bedridden elderly individuals to prevent decubitus ulcers.
- Provides treatment protocols to ward off skin irritation and infection for wounds that may not heal well, due to other medical problems such as diabetes or poor circulation.
- Cooperates with other resident services when coordinating nursing services to ensure that the resident’s total regimen of care is maintained.
- Provides direct nursing care as necessary and as department needs may dictate.
- Develops and participates in programs designed for in-service education, on-the-job training, and orientation classes for newly assigned personnel.
- Implements standards of nursing practice in infection prevention, reviewing and revising as necessary to reflect changes in nursing practice and resident population.
- Receives and transcribes physician’s orders to resident’s charts, Kardex/Care Medication Administration Record (“MAR”), treatment/care plans, as required.
- Prepares and administers medications and performs treatments as ordered by the physician.
- Charts nurses’ notes in an informative and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided as well as the resident’s response to the care.
- Completes the required forms upon admission, transfer, and/or discharge.
- Makes written and oral reports/recommendations concerning the activities of shift as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Serves as the expert in Wound Care.
- Ability to multi-task and remain calm under stress.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Understands and follows infection control standards, policies and procedures.
- Must be able to adapt to a flexible work schedule and occasional overnight travel.
- Demonstrate basic computer knowledge and ability with an aptitude to learn company applications.
Education and Experience
- Current CPR Certification required.
- Possess a current license to practice in the State as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
- 1 year of experience preferred.
- Long-term care experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Walking, reaching, bending, lifting, extended sitting, grasping, fine hand coordination, pushing and pulling, all with or without the aid of mechanical devices is required.
- Limited potential for exposure to environmental hazards.
- Understanding and adherence to company safety standards and protocols required.
