World Language - American Sign Language Teacher

Under direction of the Building Principal, the Licensed Teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides instruction in American Sign Language and introduces students to elements and characteristics of the deaf culture. Creates an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student.

Responsibilities

  • Provides a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
  • Plans and develops instructional plans, lessons, experiments, and other support activities to present approved district curriculum in accordance with district goals and objectives.
  • Maintains accurate records, tests, reports, etc. as required by the Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) and policies, Federal Regulations, and School Board Policy to demonstrate student performance.
  • Analyzes and uses student performance data to inform instruction.
  • Establishes and maintains good rapport and communication with students, school personnel, and parents.
  • Establishes classroom routines and procedures and implements effective classroom management.
  • Implements School Board and school-based policies and procedures to uphold school regulations.
  • Works closely with guidance/special education personnel and outside resources to assist students with special needs.
  • Integrates technology appropriately to enhance student learning and instructional delivery.
  • Remains current and knowledgeable about evidence-based practices related to teaching and learning through professional development activities.
  • Participates in district and school-level committees designed to foster continuing improvement and growth.
  • Communicates curriculum and student-related information effectively in oral and written form.
  • Participates in all meetings (IEP, conferences, etc.).
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal/Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • State of Delaware teacher certification in the identified content area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and methodology of effective teaching.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skilled in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communications; excellent human relations skills.

Qualifications for International Applicants

Training

Appoquinimink School District may require training in Safety-Care or a similar competency-based crisis prevention intervention program as a condition of continued employment.

Failure to meet or maintain licensing or certification requirements may result in withdrawal of the job offer prior to employment or termination if already hired. Physical Requirements

  • Regularly talking, expressing, or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word, including conveying detailed or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply practices and policies.
  • Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods.
  • Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work is generally performed in a school environment and may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Criminal background check and tuberculosis test.
  • Provide proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S., completion of I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
