Workforce Development Program Participant

About the Role

Participate in a 6-week Workforce Development Program to learn about the construction industry and related trades, building foundational knowledge, skills, and abilities applicable to construction roles. Upon successful completion, participants may be eligible for placement into Turner Self-Perform Operations (SPO) as a Trade employee or with a related subcontractor Trade or Union organization.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a 6-week Workforce Development (WFD) Program to gain construction industry knowledge in a classroom setting.
• Attend presentations on:
  • Construction roles, responsibilities, and Turner Trade/Self-Perform Operations (SPO).
  • Various construction materials, methods, and trades (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP), Carpentry).
  • Virtual Design Construction (VDC), blueprint reading, project scheduling, and coordination.
  • Environmental Health & Safety and Safety Regulations.
• Complete training to attain certifications in:
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Site Safety Training (SST).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and basic First Aid.
• Learn construction math skills, including basic arithmetic and geometry.
• Develop skills in communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, and taking direction.
• Visit project sites to correlate classroom learning with actual construction work.
• Demonstrate full participation, attendance, and passing of exams to graduate from the program.
• Perform other assigned duties and activities.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or actively pursuing a GED.
• Must be 18 years of age to work at a construction project site.
• General construction industry experience desired but not required.
• Willingness to commit to the full duration of the program.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Passion and willingness to learn about the construction industry and trades.
• Basic mathematical skills and ability to read and comprehend written information.
• Active listening skills and ability to take direction, process information quickly, and follow tasks through to completion.
• Basic computer skills desired.
• Reliable transportation required.
• Limited travel as required by program activities.

• Frequently required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, use hands to handle tools, and reach with hands.
• Frequent use of computer monitor and keyboard.
• Vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to climb stairs, use construction personnel hoists, ladders, and negotiate work areas under construction.
• Occasional mobility and travel to construction work sites.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

• Regularly works in an office or classroom setting with quiet to moderate noise levels.
• Occasionally visits construction work sites with exposure to:
  • Moving mechanical parts.
  • High or precarious places.
  • Fumes or airborne particles.
  • Outside weather conditions.
  • Risk of electrical shock.
• Moderate to loud noise levels on construction sites.
• Required to work in compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
